Haha, seriously. While Twilight and some of it's fans have admittedly some faults, Twilight haters can be so ridiculous.

Right?

I'm not a Twilight fan by any means, but as a whole, I certainly prefer Twilight fans to the haters.

I'm not a Twilight fan either, but half of my co-workers are. They're perfectly nice and intelligent women, but I guess I should start making use of my shunning finger.

Some (er, most) of my friends in real life are Twilight fans, too. I like to poke fun at Twilight just like most people on the internets, but I can't look down on people for reading books I don't like. That's ridiculous.

Alright, last Twilight comment I make, I swear.
If it were a matter of looking down on someone based on their reading choice, I wouldn't do that. That borders on advocating censorship.
...Which leads me to the author of Twilight.
She did some pretty crazy things, such as making sure her bishop approved of the manuscripts and Bella+Edward and then actually made changes when the church wanted her to. Then, she donated money from the royalties of selling the rights to Twilight for the movie/merchandise to the church, who then cheerily siphoned it into the Proposition 8 campaign.
Religious censorship and homophobia?
Why would I want to condone either of those things? I realize Twilight isn't supposed to be OMFG BIG DEAL but seriously, when all those thirteen year old girls mindlessly babble on about how sweet it is that Edward watches Bella sleep (and I have met many, many thirteen year old who do so), it kills me inside that they're indirectly condoning two things that I am principally against.
So no, if it were about a poorly written book once again making it to the best seller list based on ridiculous tween fantasies, I would not be so upset about it. Read it as much as you want. But when it becomes something that depicts and indirectly includes emotionally unstable relationships, poor writing style, religious censorship, and homophobia? I want the fans to put the god damn book down.
/rant

asdfghjkl; Twilight = srs bsns

Ah, you don't have to limit your responses! It's not really a big deal if we have a conversation about Twilight. XD

You said that you consider someone to be inherently creepy/immature if they like Twilight, though. That sounds like looking down on someone based on their literary preference to me.

I agree completely that Stephanie Meyer is a nutjob. I just don't like the idea of judging Twilight fans, who most likely do not know or agree with what she's doing. Liking a particular work of fiction =/= agreeing with, or even liking the author as a person.

Honestly, I understand the anti-Twilight sentiment. I really do. I just HATE the idea of lumping all fans together or penalizing them for Stephanie Meyer's craziness.

I've got a love/hate relationship with Twilight but every Twilight fan I've encountered seemed saner than all of the people bashing it wherever they can. Some of these haters seriously should just stop caring and let people have their fun.

And BTW, icon love <3

Re: 120

[identity profile] stormily.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Same here, sort of. I actually enjoyed the movie, if only because I was trying really, really hard not to laugh the entire time. I read three out of four of the books, and I didn't really like them, but I don't have a crazy, seething hatred for them.

In any case, hating on the fans of a work of fiction solely because you don't like it is stupid. So is hating on all of the fans because you believe some of them are crazy or whatever.

Last last last last Twilight comment by me, I swear. D:

See, Twilight fans "having their fun" seems much more sinister to me based on the actions of a certain Stephenie Meyer. As I wrote in a post above:
"She did some pretty crazy things, such as making sure her bishop approved of the manuscripts and Bella+Edward and then actually made changes when the church wanted her to. Then, she donated money from the royalties of selling the rights to Twilight for the movie/merchandise to the church, who then cheerily siphoned it into the Proposition 8 campaign.

So. Twilight = srs bsns. :D

Re: 120

[identity profile] miss-yuka.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
But half of the stuff you mentioned has nothing to do with regular Twilight fans. Those thirteen-year-old girls have no idea how they support the Mormon church or Pro 8, and you know what? They don't have to. I don't know about you but I certainly don't care if I support some guy's cocaine addiction by buying a book, I just want to read something entertaining.
Also, most thirteen old kids have some fucked up impressions about love and relationships, so while they might think Bella/Edward is ~tru wuv~ they'll probably get over it (and the books in general) soon.

So, bash the books and S.Meyer all you want but condemning the fans just for liking some book you have problems with is - I repeat - ridiculous.

Re: 120

[identity profile] ryahhime.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, see, I agree.
But then here is my question to you: I have what I consider to be pretty solid reasons for disliking the book, the author, and many of the fans. Does that make me "ridiculous?"

Re: 120

[identity profile] miss-yuka.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
Judging from your comment, it seems like you don't want to get into Hetalia anymore just because of one secret by a Twilight fan. Yes, that would make you ridiculous.
And assuming anything about a person just from the fact that they like Twilight is ridiculous as well.

Re: 120

[identity profile] stormily.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
There's a difference between disliking many of the fans and deciding that if there is a (seemingly sane) Twilight fan in a fandom, there's no way you're going to join it.

Anyway, no matter what fandom you get into, I'm sure there are Twilight fans. I don't think Hetalia has more than other fandoms.
