Ok, I keep seeing all of these Hetalia secrets and I need to ask: if these are all different countries, why are they all white?

Re: Hetalia

(Anonymous) 2008-12-29 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
and blonde.

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] biocaam.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
That's what I'm wondering. :/

Re: Hetalia

(Anonymous) 2008-12-29 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Well the Asian ones aren't. Most other countries in Hetalia are European and thus, are caucasian.

If you want you can complain about there being too many blonds?

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] floriatosca.livejournal.com 2008-12-29 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's because: A. The comic focuses a lot on European history, and B. Blond seems to be the stereotypical Caucasian hair color in a lot of Japanese media.

Re: Hetalia

(Anonymous) 2008-12-29 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Because European history just isn't focused on enough.

Re: Hetalia

(Anonymous) 2008-12-29 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
In Japan? Probably not.

Re: Hetalia

If the comments in various secret posts are any indication, a lot of fans want more Asian or African countries.
I'd like an Ancient World spinoff myself. (Maybe even more than one, because the Bronze Age, the Classical era, and the Roman Empire would give you rather different sets of characters to work with.)

Re: Hetalia

I am fuzzy on the details of the current Hetalia, and I would willingly read an ancient world spinoff anyway.

The different Greek city-states could be squabbling siblings. And Minoan Crete could be their older sister or cousin.

*sits in the corner wishing for Central/South American countries to show up*

*gets bored*
*writes porn on walls*
*dies lonely and unloved*

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] floriatosca.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd love to see a Brazil or a Trinidad.

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] wanderingscribe.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yay, I'm not alone!

For some reason, I keep thinking of speedos and guys with hairless chests when I think of Brazil. This is not a bad thing, mind you.

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Because Hetalia is focused on European history.

And only like 1/3-2/5 of the cast is blonde. Rest are brown or black haired.

Re: Hetalia

(Anonymous) 2008-12-30 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Greece, Turkey, Egypt = tan, dark hair.
Italy bros = brown hair
Spain = dark hair, often drawn a little tanned.
All Asian countries (Japan, HK, China, Korea, Taiwan) = dark haired
Cuba = Dark haired, tan-skinned.
Austria = Dark haired
Hungary = light brunette
Roma Antiqua = Dark haired

Though yes, Japan does generalize with the genotypes a bit.

Re: Hetalia

How much anime have you watched? They're not 'white.' They're the same strangely not-white, not-Asian neutral skintone as every other anime ever made. Duh.

Re: Hetalia

(Anonymous) 2008-12-30 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
...Everyone in anime looks white.

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
And yet they almost all supposed to be Japanese. Hense, not-white, not-Asian 'neutral' skin tone.

Re: Hetalia

(Anonymous) 2008-12-30 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
When you draw characters that are supposed to reflect you but look differently that reeks of personal issues, not being purposefully 'neutral.' It's not neutral when Japanese characters are made to look ridiculously American.

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] geministar01.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Except that, when you point it out to a Japanese person, they think that the characters look Japanese, the same way that an American or European thinks they look white. So, obviously, they see themselves reflected despite the fact that their cultures and appearances are different. When it comes to character designs, that is the *definition* of neutral.

Re: Hetalia

[identity profile] attses.livejournal.com 2008-12-30 02:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Because they represent stereotypes, as well as the actual country. Italy has a strange obsession with pasta, England can't cook, etc. So it makes sense for them to have the colour that the country is normally thought to have.
