If fans demanded better art direction/character design from series we wouldn't have all the generic, disgusting shit you see on tv today! (Sorry for the rant but this is a number one pet peeve of mine. From all the classic anime I've watched I've noticed the quality of art in anime has greatly declined over the past few decades. Someone needs to hire a character designer that can draw more than the two same faces over and over, or hell, studios should just hire more than one character designer in general, like back in the good ol' days.)

I'm pretty sure you have some pretty strong nostaglia glasses going on. Atsuko Nakajima, Haruhiko Mikimoto, and Michi Himeno are few of the character designers that were repeatedly used over and over and just as much diversity as a character designer of today. In the area of character designs, attitude towards it never changed: get a selected few of character designers and use them over and over again for a period of time.

One thing that irritates me is that it seems less and less like people are attempting to draw a human face. Character design today is pretty simplistic and I'm pretty sure that's a trend due to the ease of animating a face with a dot for a nose and small line for a mouth instead of actual noses and lips (Hirano, Mikimoto, pretty much every 80s character designer).

Also I think Mikimoto is way more dynamic than people give him credit for. Take a look at his manga, his designs for Tytania and then say he's incapable of designing characters that are distinguishable from one another. If anything else, the fact that his style has evolved over the past few decades indicates dynamism.

Yes, there were some shitty character designs and designers in the 70s and 80s but for the most part I can't think of any current character designers that scream "amazing" to me (except maybe Nobuteru Yuki).
