I'm guilty as hell of this, or was in my earlier years. But with the exception of my Mary Sue, I always made sure the personal issue was similar enough to a character's that I could swap a few words so that it would fit within the universe. Nobody seemed to complain about it, anyway. And I guess one could say I just related to that character, but my problems were specific and I was definitely projecting. It just happened to work out, though.
