NAYRT They exist. Richard Dawkins and his ilk.

Anyone's religion can be obnoxious if they don't also live by live and let live.

Hah, this is great OP! Is Veggie Tales like really Christian or something? Sucks he backed out of the deal though, Power Rangers is awesome, he totally missed out!

(Anonymous) 2020-10-29 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
it's animated vegetables telling bible stories so.........yeah.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-30 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, I guess that vague memory of seeing some veggie tale version of the birth of jesus wasn't some fever dream and actually real?.. The more you know I guess.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-30 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
alas, not a fever dream! it is, or was, quite real. I was in college when it was a thing (like OP I guess?) so I was actually pretty amused by Silly Songs with Larry, but over time they got less entertaining and more straight-up bibley, I think the original creators had less and less control over the writing. thankfully I was getting more and more atheist at the same time so win-win.

It's part Bible stories with Important Life Lessons, part modern-day stories with Important Life Lessons, occasional fairytale/book takeoffs with Important Life Lessons. Explicitly from a Christian perspective, but the Lessons are (or were, it's been a while) mostly general nice/inoffensive things like "sharing is good" and "it's okay to make mistakes" and "help other people." Not exactly converting-the-unbelievers material...

(And then there's Silly Songs With Larry, which are just good comedy to bring fun and joy into the world.)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-30 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Interesting! I always had a distant memory of the show but knew nothing about it. I was expecting some serious bible-school show based on the secret, so that's good to know.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-30 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'd argue that its general niceness is what makes it converting-the-unbelievers - though not in OP's case. After all, who can argue with those lessons? They're universally helpful and positive. Not all conversion is in-your-face, some of it is subtle because it's more effective. See: missionary work overseas where religious programs offer food, education, and other services in third world countries.

LOL! Good for you, and I hope you ragged him for going back on his word.

I have this icon. I couldn't not reply. :)

As a fellow PR fan who also spent a big chunk of my teenage years being proselytized to, I salute you!

Obligatory chance to drop this Veggietales/Evangelion podcast made by the only people I'd trust to make a Veggietales podcast. http://www.audioentropy.com/let-me-tell-you-about-evangelion

Just popping in to say that Veggietales is rad and I still listen to the Silly Songs playlists on Youtube every year or so. Veggietales was bought out by a non-Christian company now I believe, but even their older retellings of Biblical stories were fun first, with a light sprinkling of basic morals second. Grew up in a Catholic household and there were much worse cartoons you could be forced to watch.

Lol dang, OP.

I remember watching PW when young (dropped it when they changed Pink Ranger's actress because she was my favorite and I was butthurt) so this is hilarious. Poor dude, didn't know what he was getting into.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-31 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
As a non-evangelical, non-American Christian, I am deeply bemused by Veggie Tales anyway, and the idea of them converting an adult atheist is just o_0
