On the one hand I'll agree with you that the people who tend to say this don't tend to consume any media outside of the US or UK. Or even consider media from other countries.

But on the other, wanting more diversity from media of the country/continent you live in isn't unreasonable at all. It's not like the north-west only has white people in it.

This isn't even getting into the fact that not everyone can consume media from non-English/white countries, be it for financial reasons, accessibility reasons, or simply just not knowing how to find the media in question(speaking as someone who lives outside of the US, anytime I see one of those 'watch this!!' posts for shows that don't come over onto the TV channels over here or Netflix I basically can't watch them. Certainly not legally in any way that would help with the numbers).

So while I agree with some of your point, it's also not quite as simple as that.

^ This. I do watch media that originates from outside of the U.S. Some of it has zero white people. I'd still be happy to see more casting diversity in U.S. media, too. I don't think there's anything wrong with Americans wanting their primary source of media to be more diverse and I think telling them to simply quit whining and consume more non-U.S. media is facile, at best.

But then, I once made a secret expressing the desire to see my favorite non-American, non-English speaking actor in Hollywood films but knowing it was unlikely to happen because his English is not very good and roles for Asian actors who don't speak English well are very limited. I was told - quite snidely - to consume more non-U.S. media then. I pointed out - quite snidely- that I already did, WHICH IS HOW I FOUND OUT ABOUT MY NEW FAVORITE NON-AMERICAN, NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING ACTOR.

So I definitely know that there are asshats out there who just want to shut down conversations about diversity in American media with JuSt WaTcH sOmE nOn-AmErIcAn MeDiA tHeN!!!!

Yup.

There's also the fact that it's all well and good to tell someone, Korean-American lets say, to go watch K-Drama's if they want more stories about Koreans, while it absolutely will give them stories focused on Koreans, it's not going to give them stories about Korean-Americans so the cultural gap is still going to be there, pretending otherwise is disingenuous. And I don't even solely mean the real-world issues-tackling stuff either, people of color deserve silly dumb-fun action and genre shows/movies too without needing to go international to get that.

Like I absolutely encourage people to watch international shows because the north-west isn't the only place for good/fun TV, but telling people to consume that as their only way of getting diverse media? Nope. That's not a good argument at all.
