I agree with the core of this.

But I am so fucking tired of the "lives with your parents" or "living in your mother's basement" being used as an insult.

Eh. I live with a parent. I don't see a problem with insulting people who are obviously immature and entitled.

Sometimes living with family is just living with family. It's necessary despite having done everything possible to be financially independent in this economy. Sometimes it's a good situation for everyone because you get along well and you like the company.

But are you telling me you don't know anyone who has deliberately stagnated as a human being and retreats into hysterical victimhood whenever someone encourages them to take steps towards self-growth?

Sure. And most of them aren't living with their parents, so what's your point? Financial independence doesn't equal self-growth.

+1, I don't live with my parents myself FWIW but don't think there's anything inherently shameful about it

Tbh it also perpetuates harmful stereotypes by always being aimed at men too; acting like it's bad if strong independent men live with their mom, but naturally helpless women that live with their parents are passed over without comment because the standards are different. Idr the last time I heard someone use lives-with-parents as an insult aimed at a woman and while that's good, it displays the awkward sexism of assuming women are by default less independent or immature than men and expected to live with daddy

It's just bad all around

+1

I live with a parent because

1: Living alone is way out of my price range despite me being employed full-time
2: The parent in question is old and would never be able to afford to live alone either
3: It gives me way more room to save money than scraping by in a shitty little apartment would
4: I have no desire to settle for a relationship I'm unhappy in purely to get out of this house

It's not because I'm immature or incapable. It's just not financially viable for either of us. And it would leave my one remaining parent alone, and lonely, and I hate the thought of that happening.

People need to stop using it as an insult.

THIS. With millions of people losing jobs, god only knows how many fans are living with their parents again or living in their mother's basement. Stop using it as an insult, it looks like it'll be the norm for a long time. :(

Especially since it actually IS the norm even without financial/economic necessity in so many cultures that aren't the US or western/northern Europe.
