This was part of the criticism The Shining got when it was first released (I was around back then and remember the mixed bag the reviews wound up being). I think a lot of people are looking at this particular movie through nostalgic, rose tinted glasses or have positive memories about this movie, as its been a western pop culture touchstone for a few decades now, and that is what people are really talking about when they refer to this movie so positively. Like I know people who grew up watching Howard The Duck who think its good for the same reasons.

I didn't watch it until about 2 years ago (no tv or cinema growing up), and I love it.

No, I think a lot of people really sincerely like The Shining and think it's an excellent movie. It is not Howard The Duck.
