I don't think it's any different to how it was 15+ years ago at all, you still get the same bunch of recycled stories, it's just what those stories are will differ depending on the fandom. Frankly there's only so creative any given fandom is and outside of the handful of works that really do push the mold in that regard, everything else is samey cookie-cutter fic that the particular fandom likes.
