This kinda sounds like you have an idea on how long that segment of your fic ought to be, and now you're unsure how to fill your quota. But does it have to be that long? Just because two years pass doesn't mean you have to write two years worth of words, right?

What information/feeling do you want the reader to get from those two years: Do we need to know what happens in Hogwarts? If Harry is bored and lonely without his friends, maybe that feeling is easier to convey to the reader if we don't get to hear from them either.

It's less a matter of word count and more that I don't want it to just be: Then Harry spent two years in Canada and had a perfectly pleasant time and made new friends, though he sometimes felt bad for not running away back to Hogwarts and his old friends there.

I want the reader to have a chance to like the new school and the new friends, even a little, so they're not just space-fillers? Does that make sense?

But then you need write about the new school and the new friends. That'll make it feel like time passes.

Look, generally, my approach is very utilitarian. If you're wondering whether you should include something in your writing, that question alone tells me that that something is not necessary, and if it's not necessary, it's best to cut it. If you really want to keep the Hogwarts stuff, figure out why it's important. Does Harry need to be kept up to date? Does the reader? If you're doing sth like newspapers, can those moments be used in the context of the "main story" of Harry in Canada? If you're not using newspapers and jump narrating perspectives instead, what's the motivation for that jump? Do you have a second POV character in Hogwarts, who you cut to every so often even after Harry is back?

(Feel free to ignore all this. I have a certain style I like, so that's what I'm arguing for. If it's not your cup of tea, that's fine.)
