(Anonymous) 2020-11-05 02:10 am (UTC)(link)Broad general ideas are not copyrightable. There's a difference between a general nebulous idea and a fully fledged idea that has been translated into a complete work like I feel the first Anon is talking about. I cannot copyright "Fairy tale retellings." Or "Biker werewolves." However, once those ideas are in a full fledged work with names, setting, and backstory, they fall under copyright.
You write want to make a profit off my Heaven's Heathens universe. I'm going to take issue with it. You had no part of building the ideas for that universe and coming up with the characters/setting/tech. It's a complete work all built out of multiple ideas. Especially if you try to make it look official and have similar covers to my books. (Don't bother, I don't have a lot of readers.) They are under copyright.
You want to write your own biker werewolf novels with your own characters and settings. Have at it. I have no issue. This isn't under copyright.
I hope you can see the difference.
