I'm curious about why you think so? I do both (though don't sell them) and would say Fanfic takes a lot more work. But if someone is a good writer why not pay them to write something you want to read, just the way you would pay for something you want to see?

I don't pay for fanart or fanfic. If I want to read a certain fanfic then I used to write it myself, though I don't write fic anymore. If I want to see a certain fanart, I Google it. If it doesn't exist, poor me, I guess.

As a creator I wouldn't like it if someone wrote about my characters doing XYZ and getting paid for it. I'm less stringent when it comes to Disney and stuff, but they're litigious as Hell so I wouldn't even want to get involved.

I can kind of see the worth of paying for fanart to reimburse the artist for supplies, but that doesn't hold water when the art is made digitally.

I do, however, believe in trade. If I'm at a con and I see amazing fanwork that I want, I'll try to trade some of my own stuff of equal value. I feel that's fair.

So true, yes. I totally agree with you.

I don't even a little bit understand the distinction whereby reimbursing for materials is acceptable but reimbursing for labor isn't

I had this long reply written out but I guess I'll just say I think of labor as manual labor. You can multitask while you draw. You can go outside when you draw. You can go on public transit and draw. You don't have to waste hours commuting. You don't have to be chained to a desk and it's not labor intensive like carpentry or plumbing.

But it's probably an agree to disagree situation.

It seems to me that, while obviously different forms of labor can be more exacting and painful and harsh, labor is labor. But fair enough.
