If you don't want to watch a video that's over an hour long, all you really need to know is that the insane Johnlock shipping part of the Sherlock fandom was dominated in a cultlike manner by a few adults who drew in a lot of younger fans, especially queer kids who were desperate for media representation. In addition to getting their hopes up about Johnlock being canon in the end, they also got their followers to bully anyone who disagreed with them.
