[Star Trek: Discovery]

Yep. That's pretty much why I hate Disco. She never seemed redeemable. I'm all for redemption as an arc but there are some evils too great to redeem in one lifetime.

I like my Trek characters to be at least trying to walk on the light side.

I wouldn't consider her a replacement considering regular Georgiou was killed off so early on.

I don't see her as a replacement, I think she's a totally different character. The "everyone is bi" thing is a Mirror Universe staple, not the show trying to be edgy, I think. Also, she's so much fun!

^^ this. She's a juicy villain who's temporarily behaving in a moderately reasonable way.

(I absolutely loved the little bit we saw of original Georgiou, too and the fact that they killed her off almost put me off the show. But I imagine that Yeoh gets tired of playing characters like that ( see Shu Lien) so the fact that she appears to be having so much fun is a good chunk of the appeal of her character.)

(Also, I'd rather see a mirror!Georgiou scene than an Ash Tyler scene.)

DA.

Honestly part of the reason I enjoy her so much is I can practically feel Ms Yeoh having so much fun through the screen. Her character is pretty terrible sure, but I find the performance so enjoyable I'm having fun watching her be terrible.

Exactly.

Agreed about Ash Tyler, but I really don't think they've done much with mirror!Georgiou other than use her as a plot device to annoy Saru and kill off (or try to) fuckers who need to be dead.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-10 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I literally don't see why she's even a character in the first place, like she's constantly fucking them over and playing to her own interests. She does not actually have a point other than to use the actress (who I love and hate hating her character like I do) I mean, it make zero sense that they haven't tossed her in a jail cell to rot for her crimes. It doesn't even make sense that Micheal saved her since she's an absolute bastardization of who Georgiou is and what she stood for, it sucks.
I mean they aren't even trying to redeem her even, she just hangs around to suggest genocide so all the other characters can stand and look awkward for a minute and the pretend nothing happened. I don't get it.

It doesn't even make sense that Micheal saved her

It was an impulsive and emotional act, because I think Michael thinks Emperor Georgiou has something of Captain Georgiou inside. I don't think she does and in fact super evil, but Michael as a character is always full of hope (and in this case guilt).

Also, what crimes has she committed in this universe that she could be tried for?

I'm not fond of her, but I can see why they have her. Discovery is such a different crew (more scientist than military, very feelings-focused). And I LOVE this crew for that. One of the reasons I adore Saru I because he has such a different approach to being captain.

But I can see how they wanted someone to balance it out. Because not everything is a problem that can be solved by brainpower and negotiation )- but yeah, they could have gotten another character for that.

I love her, but I enjoy her kind of character: the a-moral piece of shit who plays nice with the good guys sometimes when it's convenient for both parties. She isn't a good person and isn't meant to be, her affection for Michael is probably the only good thing about her but that doesn't make her a good person on any level.

I wouldn't consider her a replacement for OG Georgiou though, she was meant to be a flip of her character: the bad tyrant as opposed to the good captain.

The only problem I have with her as a fictional character who exists for entertainment value us that the show can get into a rut of:

1) thing happens
2) cut to Georgiou saying something snarky
3) repeat

That gets old. Other than that, I think she's fun. I don't think the show portrays her as likeable or redeemed or anything less than morally reprehensible. I don't feel like I'm being asked to root for a bad person or accept a character wearing the skinsuit of another character I'd seriously gotten to know and love.

Hey, it's okay to not like her. She really is a shit of a person (though as others have said ITT, Michelle Yeoh seems to be having a lot of fun).

Storywise... Her presence, and opinions, provide a constant counterpoint to the Standard Starfleet Ethos of diplomacy first, scruples, etc. etc. So far each season of Disco has been very heavy on digging into why Starfleet values those principles, and why it should stick to them even when times are tough. And it can be useful to have a character giving a voice to the counter-arguments.

In particular, there was a really fascinating scene between her and Sarek in late s1. They're quietly bitching to each other, bragging about how cool *their* Michael is and so on. Basically establishing themselves as standard-bearers for their respective philosophies.

And they both decide to destroy the Klingon homeworld.

It just... really summed up to me, how well-intentioned extremism shades into straight-up evil.

So I both like her (I enjoy the feral ones) and think she's useful to keep around.

Sorry she's not floating your boat, nonny. I hope you've got some characters you enjoy right now.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-11 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
+1, I loved that in S1. And I like that she's so obsessed with Michael, even though it's not *her* Michael, and this Michael never betrayed her and in fact saved her life at great risk. She's a great character to have around to poke people in the morals.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-11 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I mean I completely disagree, but at the same time I don't feel like getting into it.
Like yeah, she served her purpose in the negaverse and all that, but never was her opinion regarded as Starfleet, killing the Klingon homeworld was completely against Starfleet's ideals. Just because one group under pressure made the wrong decision does not make that a rule of what Starfleet stands for. Hell, her purpose ended right as soon as they left the Mirror World, she's just a plain burden and entirely ineffectual to the plot since /nothing/ she says is going to hold any weight given how low people think of her, not to mention her plot redundant suggestions.

I haven't seen the third season any yet, but can someone please explain what OP means with "people aren't really gay, they're bi"? I know about bi stereotypes but what does that have to do with putting it up against the possibility of her being gay? I recall nothing about non-mirror Georgiou being gay, or any sexuality, and I've seen her episodes multiple times. And mirror Georgiou was always shown as bi. So she's not "bi instead of gay," she's just bi.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-11 08:13 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, it's not about her sexuality at all, it's about something she said. She hits on Stamets, he says he is gay, she does the faux-progressive, de facto homophobic thing where she erases his homosexuality by declaring that, actually, sexuality is fluid and he's not really gay.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-11 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Hard agree, I can't stand the way they're writing her. Every time she opens her mouth I cringe.
