Except the husband is utter murdering garbage and she would be better off rid of him.

Eh. I like that they kept that in, instead of trying to alter it so Max is 100% innocent. It's clear he's not an entirely stand up guy, but he's not supposed to be. I'm also not inclined to say he's garbage for it, either. Is murder wrong? Yes. He was conned into a highly abusive relationship and he shot his abuser. As a rich man, he had other options he should've pursued, but IIRC, the novel makes it clear he regrets his pride kept him trapped in that marriage.

And no, she wouldn't necessarily be better off without him. Remember what position she was in before she married Max? That wasn't better. She'd be back in that position of having no home, no money, no family... only worse this time.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people who hate Maxim would celebrate the character if the genders of Rebecca and Maxim were reversed. Then they'd be all "yaaaas queen good on you killing that abusive fuck!".

Maybe, but it's more complicated than a sexist double standard, if that's what you mean. When it comes to Max vs. Rebecca, Max has more power. It's his wealth, his family name and community standing and the fact that he's a man who has all these things. If the time period/setting remained the same, switching the gender of the characters, Rebecca (even a wealthy Rebecca from a good family) still would not have the same power Max does in the original scenario. She would've been expected to ignore Max's affairs and abuse and put up with them, because that's what women of her class did. She might've even been criticized for complaining, because the facade was in place and very few people knew what was going on beneath. That's exactly how upper class people were supposed to conduct their affairs.

So yes, I could see people being happy for Rebecca if their roles were reversed. Because she'd be the underdog in a way that Max wasn't.
