I feel you. 'No,' is a full sentence. Asking for this, for free, is a huge imposition and I know it's the thing in fandom and to extent indie authordom, but it's rather entitled and can be rude. I mean, by all means, go "I need betas, can I have some volunteers" is one thing, but asking someone who isn't soliciting that type of work is rude.

Yes, this is work.

Encourage them to find a development editor and you know give someone some income during these trying times. Or start charging. (350 bucks for 50,000 words is about the going rate. Yes, I am available for dev editing.) I know it's fanfic and probably fun for them and that's great. But really, if they want someone else's time, they should be willing to pay for it.

The choosing beggars will be found quickly and bugger off.
