But not everyone's OTP are things they want to happen in canon?

Like, it'd be fucking nice. But what

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Like what do you mean you don't 'believe' in OTPs? Like you're a strict multi-shipper or...? I'm just trying to get a better understanding for what you mean.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
I also don't understand what you mean by "I don't believe in OTPs."

They're not really something to be believed in or not believed in. You can have OTPs or you can not have OTPs, but like, people have OTPs. Are you saying you don't believe they have OTPs?

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think they're saying they don't believe in picking two characters at the start of a canon and saying they're your OTP (then consuming the canon entirely in terms of how the OTP interact) - they like to see how the plot develops first. Which is very reasonable, and I've seen more than enough people develop elaborate headcanons from a trailer and then behave ridiculously when that's not what actually happens in the actual canon.

NAYRT.

Oh I'd find that confusing tbh. I don't develop OTP's based off of promotional material, mine crop-up entirely from consuming the canon, usually there's a distinct moment where I'm like 'oh, I LIKE it like it' and a ship lands into OTP territory. But once I have them they are ironclad and won't budge(well not unless the canon distinctly drops the ball with them, that has happened once or twice but it takes a lot for me to discard an OTP fully).

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
OP of thread - Yeah, I'm the same. I mean, sometimes my OTPs form quickly, but usually in that case it's a show where there are two main characters who spend a ton of time together and everybody else is secondary. In that case they might become my OTP within the first episode, because their dynamic (and the show's dynamic) is clear and defined from the get-go. For example, Mulder/Scully. You can watch the pilot and see basically how it's going to go for the next seven years.

But my current OTP took a long time to really crystalize for me. One of the characters wasn't even in the story for the first several years, and then even once he was in the story it didn't occur to me to ship it for another year or so. And then suddenly I had that, "Oh. Oh," moment where I realized I shipped it.

Once I ship it, though, it's like you said, ironclad. Sometimes I'll quite following canon if it gets bad enough, but continue shipping my OTP anyway, because the fanon and headcanons are enough for me.

AYRT.

Mmm, yeah I get what you mean, some shows set-up a good dynamic(platonic or romantic) from the first episode and as such you can absolutely get into them from the jump and continue the canon while shipping them the whole time. It tends to take me about half-way through a first season to hit OTP territory if I'm into a ship, but that's also dependent on the canon and the characters, I've had a few cases like you where a character is added in down the line and I ended up with an OTP despite the show airing for years prior.

It's funny how brains work.

"Put on a chastity belt"? Why? Ignoring everything else, I kinda want to pick your brain over the choice of these words.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Extremely weird choice of wording there.

+1

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ditto.

This has got to be one of the most bizarre secrets I've ever read.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
I mean- it's like they had ten paragraphs of text, couldn't fit it all into their secret, decided that the first sentence of every paragraph was like, idk, good enough? to get their point across, and failed miserably.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Thats it. Thats the vibe I'm getting from this.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 08:01 am (UTC)(link)
How 'bout you put on some thick mittens so that we don't have to read whatever you type OP?

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm imagining someone slapping away at a keyboard whilst wearing mittens and it's very amusing

LOL The salt in the comments

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
OP, if this is you then please explain the chastity belt thing because it's going to haunt me for the rest of my fucking life what does it even mean

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 09:13 am (UTC)(link)
Like 99% are just asking for clarification/completely confused. You either need to redefine your definition of salt or dug up the apparent skeleton key you've been hoarding and share with the class about what this secrets is going on about. Cause here, we be confused.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Hold up there OP.
Are you the anon who thought they should start trolling again to somehow "put people in their place"? 'Cause I'm gonna have to burst your little bubble here and tell you that, yeah, mission not accomplished. Self-destruct at liftoff, fyi.

I've never called "troll" before, but if that's what you think you're doing, well, I think you've embarrassed yourself enough as it is. You're not the class clown, you're the laughing stock. And if anything, at least my record's still clean cause making an idiot of yourself ≠ a troll. Life lesson for you there bud. I'll expect my check in the mail by Wednesday.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes reading comprehension fails, but other times it's genuinely a poorly worded message. It's pretty clear which is which here.

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
The put on a chastity belt line is throwing me through a loop here and wish the rest of this secret had been as strange as that line. Just for the meme potential

(Anonymous) 2020-11-17 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Meh, I prefer Tar Season.
