OP - When I googled it what I got was that it's the term for a stone pillar with a carved head on top, which were used in ancient Greece as boundary markers or signposts. But most of the pictures do indeed show the pillars as having rather conspicuous penises halfway down. So you were close? (Unless it's a multi-purpose term that applies to winged-penis good luck charms as well!)
