The english language doesn't work that way. There are completely different connotations to the word, like several anons have mentions above, that have /nothing/ to do with religion. Assuming everything you see is bigotry because it could be taken that way if you squint and blur your eyes a little, is exactly what begets the broad-wall belief that this /must/ be bigotry people latch onto.

The assumption that there is no physical way a gay ship should be regarded in the realm as any mention of the word 'sin', only spreads the prejudice you're fighting against.
There is no such thing as all or nothing, context and understanding is really the only solution here.

Obviously there are different connotations. That didn't seem to be what the OP was objecting to though.

OP literally said "in any context". That any use of the word sin or sinful makes them cringe regardless of how anyone used or intended it.
