They're popular in Germany! They had these little comments in them, four or five per book. You had to use red decoder foil to be able to read them. They pointed out hints in the story and asked leading questions (sometimes even deliberately misleading). I read all the books our local library had!

Yes! And maybe this'll be a fun thing to know for the OP, but the German audio play series for this is still ongoing (the boys are college age in it now), and the VAs for Bob and Peter ship it too and love leaning into that, to the point where they shared a kiss at a live reading.
