On the one hand, I got stuff done today. On the other hand, it mostly wasn't work stuff, it was mostly Thanksgiving shopping. On the third hand, I didn't really have much to do at work anyway.

So, on balance, fine.

I might have Covid. Coworker has it. I've had a headache and nausea for two days.

My boss is letting me work from home one more day of the week, so with taking a PTO day on Monday, the only post-Thanksgiving day I'll be in office is Wednesday, and then just Mondays and Wednesdays after that. I appreciate that he listens to and addresses my concerns. Honestly, he'd prob be okay with me working from home more, but I know he can't swing it until our hospital shuts down elective surgeries. ...and our surgeons are the greediest motherfuckers either of us have ever encountered, so they're def gonna play chicken with covid mandates.

Okay, I guess. I realized last night after I posted about finished the "How to Self-Pub if you don't like 'Zon's algorithms" guide is it's really part 3 of stuff, not part 2. (I already have a general "I Finished a Book, Now What?" Guide.) So, today I started working on the Part Two which is all about editing and some very common beginning writer problems I see in indie books. So, a lot of work. I do have the general stuff already written thank god. It's formatting and expounding.

My editor was all "Sounds like something to do until January" when my books come out of KU and I can change my process.

I will be posting links here when they're done. I promise.

It's just I dunno ADHD super focus. If I can get it out, I can go back to writing books!

I feel icky. I hope it is just a cold. The person who came to my house and then her daughter tested positive for COVID tested negative. And I remembered that I wore a mask the whole time she was at my house. So I don't think it is COVID. But feeling nervous anyway.

I'm alive.

I found out late last week that I was being let go. My company in total let 31 people go and I was one among them. Our company told us years ago they'd be "transitioning" our dept out to Mexico, so it wasn't unexpected per say. But it still sucks to lose your job.

I don't know if I'm handling this well or if I'm in a state of denial or something, but I'm not as upset as I thought I would have been. When I was told that I was being let go I just remember thinking in my head, "Well, here we are now." I didn't feel a strong urge to cry or even feel much heat of anger. I remember feeling this dread, but it was more due to the uncertainty that comes with no job security.

The only time I began to cry was when my supervisor told me that she thought I was a good worker and she knew I would go on to do better things. She was a great mentor.

I was told I could apply for a job in a different department, but for a lot of reasons I don't think there's room left for me at that company. I don't know if I will go on to do better things, but I do know that I'm ready for something different.

I'm now faced with not knowing what to do. My mom suggested I go on unemployment for as long as I can and go back to school. I just don't know what I want to go to school for. I don't know if I should go for something I'm passionate about or if I should be more practical in schooling. I was told I could connect with a worker's assistance program but right now I'm still in the mood to sit at home and not do anything.

I've never really given myself an opportunity to just live for me, and these past few years I realized that I have the freedom to do that, but I really don't know how to do that. It's an amazing feeling to know that I'm free to live for me and not feel guilty for having ambitions, but at the same time I don't want to fuck it up and I really don't know what I want, realistically.

But um, Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and I have a bunch of free time to prep and cook for this year's Thanksgiving. It just sucks that I can't go over to my parents, but on the plus side I live with my sister and her family so I'm grateful to be able to cook a big meal for my family. Just got my turkey ready today! Trying out a dry brine for the first time. Heard it gives a very juicy turkey with little fuss. I also got a potato ricer and I've never made mashed potatoes this way, so I am very very excited.

1 of 3 ten-hour work shifts down, thanks to my employer not offering part-time employees paid holidays or allowing them to work on holidays. Fortunately since I'm on a flex schedule I can still get my usual paycheck, but it means 10+ hours (since I'm forced to take a lunch) each day. Hate Thursday holidays.

Also my chronic GI issues are being dumb and I have been so incredibly thirsty but everything I have tried to swallow today has left me nauseated for hours afterwards no matter how good it tastes... except coffee. Which I can't drink now because I should be going to bed soon so I can get up at 6 again.

I am so fed up with the fucking upcoming holiday discussion around covid.
They try so hard to make it possible for large gatherings to happen on christmas and I'm like????? DO YOU WANT A THIRD WAVE IN JANUARY???? BC THATS HOW YOU GET IS.
every other religion had to have small scale or no celebration / gatherings for their big holidays but CHRISTMAS is most important?? Fuck off.

My girlfriend adopted our dog when she was older and loves her to pieces but always laments she never got to see our dog as a puppy. For Christmas, I had an artist online do a portrait of our dog as a puppy. :)

I got my sister an Undertale jacket for Christmas. I know so so very little about Undertale, except that my sister (who is 16 years younger than me) likes to play Undertale. I've bought her a lot of clothes before, but she often doesn't wear what I buy her. I was so glad that she wore that jacket everywhere for a couple years.

Re: Best Present You Ever Gave

I couldn't say for sure because I don't know for certain what anyone really thought of anything I've ever given them, I have this hangup where I assume anytime someone says something nice to/about me, they're trying to cover up how annoyed/disappointed they are in me.

But the one that seemed to go over well that I was pretty proud of planning... my long-distance s/o and I, before we got together, bonded over discussing a pairing in some fantasy novels that we both shipped like fedex when we were teenagers, over a decade before we met. And in fact, she identified with one half of that pairing, I identified with the other. So we had that odd little coincidence even before we were dating.

Fast forward a couple more decades, I'd gotten pretty good at cosplay and she usually wore stuff to go with my costumes if I made it, but we've been several states away for a couple years. But I was going to a con that took place her birthday weekend and I was like "Hey, if you can get time off and a way down, you should stay in my expensive hotel room, have a nice birthday vacation on me." So we wrangled that, and coincidentally, I had been working on a cosplay of my half of that old pairing of ours, since it was one of my dream cosplays. So she was like "I *need* to see you in that costume, or as much of it is finished by then!"

So not only did I work on that thing every spare second until it was done, I then pretended it wasn't and that I was still working on it... while I was instead working on another costume, using some of her old clothes that were still at our place to get the sizing right.

So we get to the con, I arrive first and do a little recon in the hotel room. Later, I'm like "Hey I got further than I thought on that costume, wanna see it?" So I start getting into the costume, then when I'm about done, I offer a little jewelry box, saying I got her a birthday present by the way.

Inside was the pendant that goes with her character's outfit, which from the way she immediately froze at the sight, it looked like she instantly recognized despite there being only a couple visual depictions of the character... and also a note to look in the top drawer of the hotel dresser, which contained the dress, wig, and other accessories.

So we spent a couple days her birthday weekend running around as a ship we'd shipped before we ever knew each other, doing dream photoshoots with scene recreations and so on... I sure hope she enjoyed it as much as I did, and as much as I enjoyed doing that for her.

My brother and I each saved up for ten years to throw an all out party for our Mom's 50th. We bought her some things which we knew she'd love as a redherring, then surprised her with a holiday to Europe too. Remembering how happy she was is one of my best memories ever. Never seen my Mom that happy before.

We're neither of us well off so it's probably the only time we're likely to be able to do anything like that, but it was so great being able to thank her for everything she's done and does for us.

Controversial Thanksgiving Food Opinions

(Anonymous) 2020-11-24 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think turkey is overrated. Ham is where it's at.

Re: Controversial Thanksgiving Food Opinions

Agreed! I don’t really like turkey unless it’s smothered with gravy, but I love ham. Also, cherry pie is better than pumpkin pie.

Honestly, I'm for almost anything besides turkey. Roast chicken is delicious, ditto ham. My first choice would probably be prime rib (rare!) or lamb. Roast duck would be great, too.

Petty Grievances/Why can't this be different

(Anonymous) 2020-11-24 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Can be fandom/non fandom related.

I just got into Attack on Titan (the fic, will likely start watching the dub for the VA) and OMG by the nature of the ships I like (OC or Reader/ Levi or Erwin) some of these fics...like the premise isn't awful but the execution!!! I'm dying out here!!! Lol I can also go ahead and write my own stuff, but it's nice to read something you didn't write one your own/someone else's idea.

Things you wish were different but can't be helped?
