Since not just the blade, but the boot itself is different, maybe he has issues with his feet (or hips or back). He's 60 and I think if he's more comfortable in those skates, then that's fine. Unless he needs to do jumps or spins on the ice, which is what figure skates are designed for, they not necessary.

I legit asked my dad about this (and nearly got myself disowned in the process;;) but the boots don't vary as much as you'd think. A hockey boot restricts certain lateral movements, but that's more the blade than anything. Anyone can wear another skate. With all the standing around that Ron does, one type of blade/boot does not affect his being able to host.
And while I get why they're not necessary, it's the the whole "why not?" that bothers me the most. Physically there is no reason not to wear the other blade. So like, why not? Y'know?
