Love it? Hate it?
What are your favorite Christmas songs?
Also, I LOVE cool/unexpected covers of traditional Christmas songs. Got any to reccomend?

I do love it! I even performed Christmas songs with a choir, in another life.

I don't have a solid fave. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing is pretty high on my list, because it's one of the ones I sang. I feel the music really helps me get into the spirit.

In my heart is a Christmas tree farm
Where the people would come
To dance under sparkling lights
Bundled up in their mittens and coats
And the cider would flow
And I just wanna be there tonight

-- Christmas Tree Farm, Taylor Swift. (And yes, she grew up on a Christmas Tree Farm.)

Otherwise, I really love Shakin' Stevens Merry Christmas Everyone and Martina McBride's Do You Hear What I Hear?

I hate a lot of Christmas music, because I was raised by choristers, and there is a lot of garbage out there.
Actual Christmas songs I like: Carol of the Bells, Silent Night, Il est Né, Carol of the Birds (but good luck finding a decent recording), The Rebel Jesus, Gaudete
More broadly Christmassy stuff, inc. comic songs: White Wine in the Sun,
St. Stephen's Day Murders... those are the only ones I can think of right now.

Are some of these from the Chieftain’s Bells of Dublin album? If so, it’s definitely a nostalgic favorite for me that largely holds up - quite like St. Stephen’s Day and that version of Il Est Né as well (also throwing my hat in for Past 3 o’clock, O the Holly, and The Wren medley).

Others for me: God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman; Ríu Chíu (thanks to the Monkees); Eartha Kitt’s version of Santa Baby, which is more scheming than sexy baby to me.

But Teach Me How to Understand Christmas, Community’s parody of sexy Christmas baby songs, is great, too (actually all the songs from that episode are fun holiday-themed earworms for me).

Yeah, I love that album. I'd never heard of Ríu Chíu, but I'm listening to it right now :)

Ayrt - haha, I was listening to Gaudete as I’d never heard of it before either. Thanks for the exchange! ♫꒰๑・◡・๑꒱♫

Love Christmas music. Made a CD of it for my dad one year. He cried. For a few years we volunteered for Thanksgiving and since dad plays banjo/guitar, I'd sing Christmas music while people ate. Those were actually more relaxing holidays than family ones. So, good memories for him.

But right now not until after Thanksgiving.

I have little rules. No snow until after my bday (beginning of month) no Christmas music/decor until after Thanksgiving. Just... for my sanity.

Favorite instrumental: Carol of the Bells
Favorite with words: Santa Baby by Eartha Kitt
Worst? CHRISTMAS SHOES! THE WORST SONG EVER.

If you've not seen it, Bing Crosby and David Bowie sing The Little Drummer Boy (Peace on Earth) https://youtu.be/n9kfdEyV3RQ

For weird covers, Star Wars Sleigh Ride https://youtu.be/zIIg9nAeCtA

I have a deep love of Christmas songs that, like, you could listen to them when it wasn't Christmas and they'd still be good songs, if you know what I mean? So here are my faves.

Christmas songs:

All That I Want by The Weepies
Christmas Lights by Coldplay

December songs:

River by Joni Mitchel
A Long December by The Counting Crows
Through Frozen Forests by Aaron Espe

Love it. I listen to it all year round. I love a lot of traditional stuff by choirs and really old medieval stuff especially. I'd probably say Come thou Long Expected Jesus and Oh Come oh Come Emmanuel are my two favorites because I love the minor key sound.

Another favorite is Angels From The Realms of Glory, but only the American Tune. The British version uses the tune from Angels We Have Heard On High, and I didn't grow up with that tune for Realms of Glory, so it sounds wrong to me.

I'm currently loving some Medieval stuff like Gaudete, Riu Riu Chiu, In Dulce Jubilo, the Coventry Carol, Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day, and I saw Three Ships. I'm just loving the sound of Medieval carols.

I love medieval carols too. Do you count The Holly and the Ivy? It's supposed to the oldest of all the carols.

Oooo, forgot about that one just because I hadn't listened to it recently. But I love that one too. Now I'm going to go hunt for versions of it on Youtube.

Hate it with a burning passion. Luckily this year with lockdown we should be spared that crap blasted in the streets?

I just found a new favorite: Christmas Wrapping by The Waitresses.
The song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nud2TQNahaU
The AMAZING bassline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5nc34ezGK4

I'm not a big fan of tradional songs, but I mind Gloria in Excelsis Deo and Carol of the Bells least.

I also love this bit of twinkly, winter-y film music:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C924eNQwRm4
It's from an old Czech/German co-production, a version of Cinderella set in winter time. It's become a staple and runs on TV all the time around Christmas.

And of course this ear-worm:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFZqDcFU4Ow
A song about baking Christmas cookies. It's beyond like or dislike, it just is.

Christmas Wrapping is my absolutely favourite non-traditional!

Re: Christmas Music

(Anonymous) 2020-11-25 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
:D

I bought a bass years ago and played around with it some but gave up after a few months and haven't touched it since. It's still at my parents house and just a few weeks ago I told my parents that they were welcome to get rid of it, if the opportunity came up. And then I heard this song and BAM, I'm determined to learn again. It'll be a project for 2021. I'm so motivated!!

Bach's Christmas Oratorio is my favourite classical, specifically the version conducted by Nikolas Harnoncourt. I love all the carols, but I just love the joyfulness of the first part of the Christmas Oratorio!

Non-traditional I love Christmas Wrapping by the waitresses, driving home for Christmas and fairytale of new york. :)
