What is your favorite skincare product (or routine) and why?

I have sort of gotten into it during the pandemic.

I like face masks (the ones from The Creme Shop are my favorite ones) because they’re nice and cooling. Plus, when I’m wearing one, I have an excuse not to do anything for about ten minutes.

I'll try them out!

I go hard on my skincare routine. So I probably can’t pick just one product but I can list a few:

Differin Gel - It’s technically an acne product, but it’s actually just the strongest retinoid you can get over the counter.

CeraVe PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion - A great facial moisturizer. Lots of beneficial ingredients. Inexpensive.

Buffet Serum by The Ordinary - The texture of this is a little weird and sticky for my liking, but it has a lot of beneficial ingredients and it’s cheap as dirt.

Q10 Face Serum by The Inkey List - Love the texture of this, it’s light but moisturizing. Great ingredients. Dirt cheap.

I used to love Clinique Pep-Start Daily UV Protector SPF 50, but the fuckers discontinued it in my country. So now I’m on the hunt for a decent SPF. I hear Purito is a great brand, but have yet to try it.

I’ve tried some expensive shit, like C-Firma from Drunk Elephant, and 10% Glycolic Moisturizer by Peter Thomas Roth, and they’re good products, but they’re too expensive for me to justify the price.

My basic principle is: An SPF, a retinoid, and a moisturizer are important. Everything else is secondary. Also, don't break the bank looking for results. Skincare is a long game. You're not going to look more than slightly fresher now, no matter what product you use. Skincare is about taking care of your skin so that in ten or twenty years it looks better than it would have if you'd done nothing. If you want to look younger than you currently do, botox, filler, and laser treatments should be your go-tos (and there's no shame in that).

AYRT - You're welcome. :) I don't know if you ever use Beautypedia, but it's a good resource for seeing breakdowns of the ingredients in a beauty product. Because a lot of beauty products out there make big claims and don't actually have the ingredients to back any of it up--including some really expensive products.

My caveat about Beautypedia is to take their reviews with a grain of salt. They can be a little bit overly leery about certain ingredients--particularly certain plant oils that may or may not be sensitizing to skin cells.

If you are using a product and you really feel like it's great for you, don't let a mediocre Beautypedia review steer you away. But overall they're still a good resource for finding products that have a lot of beneficial ingredients in them and not a lot of negative ingredients.

I would invest in a think clean app, especially if you're in America. The amount of extremely questionable ingredients used in commercial skincare is scary, including some known carcinogens.

My skin is very angry all the time and can't handle a deluge of products or scented products or just even anything not specifically made for sensitive skin— so my skincare routine is quite minimal.

AM:
- Wash with CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser
- Layer of CeraVe Hydrating Hyluronic Serum
- Apply CeraVe AM Moisturizing Lotion

It took me a long time to get around to CeraVe. My slightly younger self was convinced Sephora had all the answers. If only I knew! But it's doing wonders for my angry skin.

PM:
- Wash with CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser (once a week, I skip this step and exfoliate with Neutrogena Hydro Boost cleaning exfoliator instead)
- Apply a layer of La Poche Rosay's soothing lotion for sensitive skin
- Layer of CeraVe Hydrating Hyluronic Serum
- Spray on a layer of Lush's Eau Roma Water toner
