113. I know for a fact that there are cool, smart people who love Hetalia. Why does there seem to be such a high concentration of douchey Hetalia fans on FS? It's not just the drawing - the whole "BECAUSE!! TOO MANY COUNTRIES!!!" argument doesn't work too well when you've got a character representing Sealand.

Why not just say that the other countries aren't relevant to the story at this time? Despite that answer being really problematic in other ways, at least it makes sense.

116. I went through the same thought process, actually. I see no reason why it wouldn't work. :)

155. As a seriously skinny chick, the bugs me sometimes, it's true (I massively dislike just about all the "real women" rhetoric, to be honest). Still, on the other hand, I understand the idea behind it, and can sympathize to an extent. It is rare(r) to see bigger ladies on TV, so I get why people might be excited when one comes along and is awesome. Skinny awesome girls (as far as awesome women on TV go) aren't all that rare. So a thin character might be super interesting but on some level is just more of the same, whereas the larger woman is a departure from the norm on top of being a cool character. That's my theory, anyway.

164. I keep hearing about this series and it sounds too cute, but I never looked into it because I figured my Japanese wouldn't be good enough to be involved in the fandom. So, uh, I'm sorry to hear that I might have been kind of right?

Sealand has showed up in a grand total of three strips:

1: his introduction strip, which was poking fun at England's incompetence at keeping Sealand under control.

2: The strip about Sweden buying Sealand, which was poking fun at how you can buy anything on ebay.

3: For two panels in the introduction of Canada, where he pretended to be Canada so he could get into the world meeting. And the strip was poking fun at how Canada is so unnoticeable that somebody else can pretend to be him and nobody would notice.

It's not like he's in every strip ever. He shows up THREE TIMES and isn't mentioned at all in the rest. And even then, the jokes aren't about him specifically. He's being used in jokes about other countries.

If you're going to use a minor country to prove this point, try picking someone else who shows up more often.

I don't care how many times he's showed up, honestly - it's the fact that he exists as a character at all despite Sealand being, well, Sealand. He could be as rare as Vietnam (I'm under the impression that she hasn't actually appeared in the comic, right?) 113's argument would still feel disingenuous to me.

(Anonymous) 2009-01-03 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
She might have, but she hasn't showed up in anything that's been translated so far. Only a handful of all of the strips have been translated into English, and there's a lot more characters than the ones we English fans have seen, because the translators haven't gotten to those strips yet.

For comparison, the author has been doing Hetalia since 2003, but the first strips weren't translated until about summer 2008. And the translators are doing, on average, about 3-4 strips a week.

(Not even remotely into Hetalia, just noticed this comment.)

On the third part - dude, they pulled a Chaser? XD

(At the APEC meeting in Sydney, a few comedians got in to a heavily-guarded area... by pretending to be Canada. Their security passes said JOKE instead of APEC on there, they were pretending to be the PRESIDENT of Canada, and when they got across the road from the hotel, they decided the joke had gone far enough and got out of the car. With one of them dressed as Osama bin Laden. Needless to say, no one notices Canada XD)

It's possible, the mangaka does stuff like that sometimes. Like he's done couple about Ebay after big events involving Ebay (such s Sealand selling himself), and he did one involving the recent economic recession IIRC. Most of the Canada strips (excluding one) are all jokes about fairly recent events.

Heh, neat XD This (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/APEC_Australia_2007#Chaser_incident) is the incident in question, incidentally. (...Wow, that totally didn't flow.)

(Anonymous) 2009-01-04 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
I laughed so hard. Even without the context of Hetalia, that's hilarious.

155: Yeah, you're pretty much hit the nail on the head.

And, heck, forget skinny as the opposite of fat, how about skinny as the opposite of muscular? A woman who could realistically do the things pencil-thin women do in action films do would look NOTHING like the Mila Jovavich or Sarah Michelle Gellar. They'd be big and muscular and probably pretty flat-chested (not that either of those girls are overly, er, top-heavy).

(Anonymous) 2009-01-04 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Hetalia is mostly humor/crack, and you don't crackier than the existance of Sealand. Never mind Hetalia, reading the wiki made me laugh. It was too good an opportunity to pass. And I say that as some one from a country that hasn't even been mentioned in any shape or form in strips, sketches or color charts.

You seriously don't need any knowledge of Japanese to be in the fandom :( Srsly. Join in, it is a really cute series.

Sealand shows up because he is the joke in that his "country" is so insignificant and did pretty weird shit to try to get it recognized as one.

Although, I would like to see Isles of Man in Hetalia.

But I do agree that more of the countries involved in the WW need to show up like Mexico, Brazil and India.
