(checks off another person who misses the point of the song entirely)

How did I miss the point? The song begins with Princeton making a racist assumption (that all Monsters are related), which pisses Kate off. Princeton then tells her that she's the racist because of the special Monster schools (is this supposed to be a comment on Affirmative Action?). Then the chorus about how racism is everywhere, which I don't find objectionable. But that's followed by these lines:
Ethnic jokes might be uncouth,
But you laugh because
They're based on truth.
Don't take them as
Personal attacks.
Everyone enjoys them -
So relax!

If someone "jokes" about how all black people are lazy, stupid criminals, I should just calm down because it's "based on truth"? But if they are based on truth, how could they be anything other than a personal attack?

They start telling ethnic jokes, when Gary Coleman shows up. He is not too happy with them telling black people jokes. But since he tells Pollack jokes, it is totally okay for Princeton and Kate to tell black jokes. If POC are racist, then racism is totally acceptable. To illustrate this point, Christmas Eve comes in and they all mock her accent. Princeton complains, Kate chides him: it's okay to make fun of her because everyone's racist! She goes on to say a lot of racist things, just in case we forgot that POC are prejudiced, too. The song ends with them telling us not to be "so PC" and accept the hilarity of racist jokes.

So, tell me, what "point" did I miss?

Actually, he points out that she is racist because she says, "No, we don't want people like *you* there!" not because of the special monster school. (Which he later raises the money to build for her, BTW)

The "based on truth" assumption is addressed nicely by the poster below, so onto your next comment.

You missed a key point in there - it's not Princeton who objects, it's Christmas Eve's fiancee, Bryan. To prove that he isn't racist when the others claim that everyone is, he retorts with, "How many Oriental wives have *you* got?" inadverdentaly proving thier point. The entire cast proves their racist tendencies one by one, and once they're all out in the open, they admit that they can't really judge the others for a problem they have themselves.

The point is, everyone of all races and creeds makes stupid, knee-jerk assuptions about other races and creeds. But reacting violently to it only serves to make people more defensive, and denying it means that you can never get over it. Coming out and admitting it is the first step to getting over it, and, once everybody figures out that they have their biogoted tendencies, they can help each other move past it. You dig?

No, he brings up the school itself as an example of her bigotry. The fact that she wants a special monster school is proof that she's a bigot. That line only proved that he was right and that the only reason to have Affirmative Action monster schools is reverse-racism.

The entire cast proves their racist tendencies one by one, and once they're all out in the open, they admit that they can't really judge the others for a problem they have themselves.

This is where I have a problem. Some parts of the song don't bother me, as racism is deeply-ingrained in our culture and a great deal of it is unconscious. If we, as a society, want to get rid of racism, we must become aware of our own prejudices. We'll also have to see how these prejudices affect our day-to-day lives. These are all important points and I'm glad that they brought them up. However, the song seems to be saying that bigotry should be socially acceptable and that the real problem with racism is that it's no longer out in the open. Except that it's only recently that people have become embarrassed by their prejudices. For a long time it was okay to tell ethnic jokes, to claim that stereotypes wouldn't exist if they weren't true. Those times were not very good for non-white people. There should be a social stigma against racism and people should feel ashamed of their own prejudices. The fact that people feel guilty when they act like a bigot is a sign of progress, as far as I'm concerned.

There's also a real lack of empathy in the song. People are legitimately hurt by racist comments and that's just brushed to the side. They shouldn't be offended, so their feelings don't matter. And, of course, the song doesn't explain why people shouldn't be offended, only why they're not allowed to speak up. "Sure, racist jokes are hurtful. But everybody's racist so I can say and do whatever I want!"

Sorry, I'm just not comfortable with that.

You dig?

For the most part, I agree with you (I do have issues with the "reacting violently" line, but I'll let it pass). However, that's not what the song is about. The song is about how white people should be able to tell nigger jokes and I'm really not okay with that. You dig?
