But "Raito" is just the english word "Light" as pronounced in japanese. People don't refer to "Final Fantasy" as "Fainaru Fantajii", or "School Days" as "Sukuru Deizu", because they're english words. His name is Light and saying "Raito" is inaccurate.

I dunno, I would normally agree with your reasoning (I hate when people use "Eru") but I'm used to it because that's what I first heard it as "Raito" so it never seemed inaccurate to me.. *shrugs* You say "tomato", I say "tomahto". I think the strongest factor that stops me from using "Light" is because once again, "Light-kun" looks hella awkward imo.

You've never met fans who insist on calling Sailor Moon "Seeramuun" or however the katakana actually reads? xD

I think the confusion is that his name is attached to a kanji for "moon". But you're right, if you're writing it in from a roman alphabet, his name is Light.

Yeah, and am I the only one who thinks it's really weird that a man who has a normal name and has a daughter with a normal name randomly decided to name his son an English word? That seems really goddamn weird to me.

I use Light, but I really prefer Raito just because it seems more like a Japanese name that a Japanese person might name their child. When the only other people with "word names," Mello and Near, are only using those words as their code names and everyone else has an appropriate, realistic names -- even Mello and Near's real names! -- "Light" just throws me the hell off.

No, not really. It can happen in Japan. Rare but still exist. Light is far from the first native Japanese character in fiction with a English first name (Alice Sakaguchi from Please Save My Earth is another famous example who was a native Japanese with a English name), although it is required still to have to write the child's name in either in hiragana or kanji from the approved kanji list for names.

Plus it is not required for the parent to follow a trend for names although it's more common overseas than in Japan when it's in two different languages. Hell, I'm from such family who the eldest has a unisex name with Hebrew male pronunciation (me), and the younger sibling has a virtually made up name (my little sister, although it was inspired from an existing name with Muslim/Middle Eastern origins).
