I'll tell you a secret: I once wrote a self-insert story where Tom Waits an I sat on a rooftop under the stars and shared a bottle of bourbon, and it ended with him saying, "You're alright, kid," and offering to buy me some eggs and coffee. It's gone now, I was too embarrassed to hold onto it. But I know exactly what you mean.

I don't think it's "underseen", it's one of the biggest classics of all time. It may be people under 20 don't know about it, but it's not inaccessible.
