Yes, simplistic tokenism has saved the day so far. And using a person of color or from a different culture as your Internet Face is totally unproblematic and never smells of cultural appropriation!

I'm not disagreeing with you here at all. But what if you use a person of a different gender as your Internet Face? I'm not a male yet I use a male icon almost exclusively. Is that problematic?

Is there a study on this anywhere? I'd love to see the results of an actual study of internet behavior based on avatars/icons. Are assumptions made based on your avatar/icon vis a vis RL gender, race, and so forth and do those assumptions color others' behavior towards you? Huh. Now I'm massively intrigued. Thank you, anonymouse. I'll be puzzling this out all night.

I have a strong feeling that it's different, somehow? Because we take gender appropriation for granted (I, for one, am wearing pants as we speak) but there's something more bothersome about the general trend of wearing other people's cultural stuff to prove that you're a cool white person? And waving around a character of color icon specifically to prove you're not racist feels a little Black People Love Us to me?

I am only sensitive about this, I think, because I went through my icons in my head and the main POC ones are Bollywood actresses in more-traditional clothes. They're pretty, and I use them, but I sure don't feel like that's a get-out-of-racism-free card, in fact, I feel like that opens a whole different can of worms.

tl;dr I wish there were more characters of color in science fiction.

oh dude I'll totally bet there are. I bet people subconsciously treat people with man-icons more like men than people with woman-icons. Of course, plenty of people that I know are represented by exploding spaceships, or frogs, or cupcakes. So I am not sure how they fit in.

Since I've been designing the study in my head the past little while, I'd have to say that even those wouldn't be considered gender neutral. For a minute I thought we could use those as control icons, but really cupcakes could be considered "feminine" icons and exploding spaceships might be taken as more "masculine" icons. So really it would skew results to consider them gender neutral.

For a control icon, we'd probably have to use (that's the royal We, baby!) something similar to the Yahoo chat default, a sort of gray vaguely human shaped but with no identifying details type thing. The less individuality in an icon, the less the respondents can infer about RL gender, race, &tc...

But that's exactly my hypothesis is that the gender, race, perhaps even sexual preference and appearance of your icon can be transferred onto you by those you interact with online. I would also hypothesize that women who use males or masculine inferred objects in their avatars/icons are treated more as the respondent would treat a male. So, for example, a man interacting with someone online who uses a male or masculine icon would be more likely to treat the person as a fellow man (assuming he knows nothing about the person he's interacting with/has no personal relationship with them).

I told you I'd be dealing with this all night. :)

Not sure if this is relevant, but: this is an RP account for the alien pictured in the icon. I have been very careful not to use any gendered pronouns for the alien, referring to it as "it" and occasionally "they" when I wasn't using the first person pronouns. I, the player, am female. The character is technically female, although it doesn't really have a gender, just a sex, and in fact mentioned the fact that it had been a parent. The other character it was interacting with and the other player both assumed that the character was male and referred to it as "he," to the point of it causing wank when my character finally corrected theirs.
