Then again - it's just a pairing. I mean, yeah, history and whatnot, but hell, my country, Hungary, is canonically together with Austria that had held it (or parts of it, depending on the period) occupied for hundreds of years. Numerous bloody revolutions later (that Hetalia doesn't even allude to) the two countries finally worked out a working deal - only to be dragged into WWI with pretty tragic results (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_of_Trianon). I've also seen her shipped with Russia, despite the fact that the SU also held us occupied for ~40 years after WWII because the Western powers basically gave the country (and other countries) to the SU as part of a power deal. Thousands of families (among them, mine) lost most of their lands, houses, etc. when the state decided to redistribute everything according to communist/socialist principles, our industry pretty much crumbled into nothing because the SU decided to use us as a mainly agricultural country. And then there was the tragic (if sadly rather stupid) revolution of 1956 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hungarian_Revolution_of_1956). The long-term effects of the Soviet occupation are still in full force nowadays, generations grew up unable to take care of themselves ('cos the state always did so), our industry is still half-dead, to say nothing about the lives lost, the constant censure and undercover agents monitoring people's thoughts and reporting everything to the Party, etc. etc. - basically if you've read '1986' you have a slightly exaggerated picture of what my country was like at the time (much like the rest of Eastern/Central Europe).

If I cared about all this in the context of Hetalia, I would be out there wanking with the rest of them about how horrible the series is. But I don't, and in fact, Austria/Hungary is one of my favorite couples, and I wouldn't be averse to some well-written Russia/Hungary either. (It helps that I'm one of the least patriotic people you'll ever find, and I'm aware that my country has always been a big pile of failure. Still, sad history is sad.)

Being squicked by an abusive pairing is one thing, but if someone is squicked on basis of history, like the OP seems to be, then I don't think Hetalia is a good fandom for them.

True, if I did that than I shouldn't even like America for oppression my people until well into the 1970s and good amount of western Europe for participating for the Middle Passage.

I think in part is that it's so recent as well that troubles people, me included. And that the canon makes such an abusive relationship that I can't really find funny until modern times when Lithuania had its sovereignty back. I noted that myself when it came to certain pairings. And I can't ship Hungary and Austria with any one else either.

But I think it's in small part of what exactly the Nation-tans are as well. Man, I need to write an essay about my theories on that soon, maybe tomorrow. I know they are anthropomorphism, but lately, especially seeing the results of that explanation here, I think it's way too simplified a definition of who they are.

Yeah, it is portrayed as an abusive relationship (as far as Hetalia takes anything seriously, really... the scars are in one of the rare serious strips, but otherwise the Russia/Lithuania relationship is often played for laughs), and I wouldn't have any problems with the secret and those who support it if the OP hadn't dragged history into it. The whole "history is real" thing... that I can't accept. Sure, Lithuania had it pretty bad, but so did many others, and in case of the former USSR or the SU satellite states, all is very recent - in case of Hungary, it all happened in 1989-1991. So why should fandom "spare" only one country because of its history? If one is fine with fandom and canon treating history lightly then I think it's unfair to turn around and complain when fanon/canon treats the history of one particular country. Personal squicks are fine, I also have topics that I feel uncomfortable dealing with in context of Hetalia, but I don't think one should blame fandom for doing what every fandom does, in a very obviously non-PC way.

As for who the characters are... well, I think this is, again, the case of fandom taking canon more seriously than the creator himself does. ^^;; (Nevertheless, I'm very interested in your essay, I love meta. :D)

Oh, you meant 1984, right? Yeah, I figured that what would Soviet Socialism would play out in a simplified view although I had a basic picture from my 9th grade Global teacher who seemed to be more fascinated in teaching governments than general history in certain countries and Russia was one of them.

Yeah, that. *facepalm* I was just about to correct it. (It's past 2 AM here and I usually make horribly embarrassing mistakes at this time of the night.)

You know, I was like D:, when I saw that Poland was suprised by Lithuania's scars - like in reality they weren't in the same situation all the time. ;;;;

Re: 126

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2009-01-09 04:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah - all countries in the CE region have had a pretty rough history, being caught between Russia and the Western powers (let alone the Ottoman Empire), but Poland is among those that had it off much worse than others. (And you know, the funny thing is that despite everything, Poland still has a positive and dynamic national anthem. Meanwhile the Hungarian anthem is like "dear God, we think you've hurt us enough already, would you please stop picking on us? Please?")

Ah well, I don't mind these little (and not so little) inaccuracies in Hetalia - I probably would if it was a serious comic but it's not (and it's not like Russia's obsession with Lithuania is not played for laughs 99% of the time), it was not made with an international audience in mind, and it's obviously not meant to offend, so... yeah. But the OP going "don't do this to my country! That history is real!" just ticked me off. Like there are no other countries with shitty pasts.

(Also, your icon is lovely. Where is it from?)

I love Hungary as nation and Hetalia character(I want to cosplay her someday). Yeah, Polish nation is kinda indestructible - that's why we have lyrics like "Poland has not yet perished, so long as we live" XD; and I like angsty Hungarian anthem very much. I think that there is no other nation that understand Polish history like Hungarians - that's why we are friends :)
About Lithuania - pairing with Russia is extremly popular - there is a many fanfics like "Lithuania forced to lick Russia's boots" etc It's always portrayed in very humiliating way :(
