I don't have icons of PoC characters because I'm white and it just feels dishonest and disrespectful to me. (That said, I don't tend to be bothered by white people with icons of PoC characters, so long as ALL of their icons aren't of PoC characters...because, well, that LOOKS dishonest and pretty creepy. But other people have different attitudes towards icons, and those icons could just be about how awesome Martha or Tosh or Morgan is.)
To me, my icons do not just represent my interests. They also represent my personality, and I choose characters with which I strongly relate to "play" me in my icons. If that makes sense. Like a fictionalized extension of me. I also tend to pick characters that make a lot of the same weird faces I do (like House, or the Tenth Doctor), or who are skinny geeky white boys like me (the Tenth Doctor again).
If the characters in my icons are "playing" me then (for the benefit of the internets - oh, lucky, lucky internets), they have to be white. Having an icon of a PoC character just feels wrong. Like I'm misrepresenting myself, and exotifying the character.
(I do actually have an icon with my own, real face. It's not very interesting, but it's there if anyone's curious to know what I ACTUALLY look like.)
I had an icon of Ella Fitzgerald for a while. Because, you know, she's love. Never once could bring myself to actually use it. (She's FEMALE too, and I also can't use icons of girls/women for similar reasons.) So I took it down.

Actually, that kind of makes the OP's point a lot more valid, since it really comes across as you thinking of PoC as 'other' and totally different to you based on the fact they're not white. :\ Or that PoC are automatically unrelateable to by a white audience. Same with the idea women's personalities and men's personalities are mutually exclusive.
Seriously, on the internet, it's not about how you look; it's about your personality, and if you wanna go the route of picking people to represent you, why stick to looks? *shrug*

And looks don't matter on the internet? Mmmm. Looks ALWAYS matter. Not actually being able to see people doesn't change that looks have an influence; it only changes how that influence manifests.
I think this rule of mine solidified (on gender, too) when a close [white] friend of mine was involved in a big wank where several people accused her of trying to pass herself off as a black woman in order to make her opinions on racism seem more valid. She really wasn't, but the accusation stood partially on her having icons of PoC. Especially after that, I haven't uploaded ANY icon without an eye as to how people are going to be reading it (and subsequently, me).
