That's only realism (maybe) if you're writing towards the end of the series or a modern AU. I lived near Lima, OH in 2009 and if you think the high school football team would have been expelled for anything short of a blatant felony in front of multiple 3rd-party witnesses, you're fooling yourself.

If I were a cunning and spiteful person who could afford a camrecorder and who knew that physical assault was a daily event, do you think "3rd party witnesses" would be that difficult? Honest question, not sarcastic - I'm only familiar with US highschool culture though tv.

3rd party witnesses aren't the issue. Depending on the timeline (because social media 10 years ago was not quite the same as it is today), it would be pretty easy to post the assault wherever.

However, sports culture being what it is in the Midwest, particularly with regards to football... there's a decent chance that unless we're talking egregious, someone almost died levels of assault, it would have been laughed off as a 'boys will be boys' kind of thing.

Sue being written up is more likely. She's a woman, and kind of butch.

The actual Lima, OH was also full of bible-thumpers in the aughts. I suspect that hasn't changed.

Oh, ugh, good point. That's depressing, but sort of helpful? At least if the characters can't do anything about it, I don't have to feel bad for not fixing it as the writer... ¯\_(-_-)_/¯

lol, at least some good has come from my purgatory in northwestern Ohio ;)

If it makes it any less depressing, a few of those assholes on the football team probably realized they were assholes once they went to college and were away from their families/not the big fish in the small pond anymore and at least tried to become better people?

That's nice from the long view, but like - if you went back in time to your own highschool years, would you rather look at bullies and think "Wow, you're going to cringe really hard over this in ten years time", or just get some little dickheads suspended? I'd go for suspension, but I'm a vengeful sort. Being calm and mature about it also has a lot to recommend it :/
(And it's a time-travel fic, so that's not a completely random question)

I go back and forth on it, honestly. High school was long ago enough for me now that on my good days I try not to blame children for behaving badly when all of the adults around them were rewarding them for doing so, particularly if I know they figured things out on their own once they got the opportunity. On a bad day, I'd like to see the little fuckers suffer.

Mmm, yep, makes sense. Well, I'll probably do a combination, and try to remember that just because the character thinks something will work (like getting hard evidence of the football players assaulting people, to pick an example totally at random) doesn't mean it actually will.
Good talk!
