"Media fandom" = mostly Western TV/movie fandom. Coined in '70s sci-fi circles to distinguish "serious highbrow SF Literature fandom" from "those plebian Trekkies." Useful in the same way that phrases like "anime fandom" and "comics fandom" are useful.

(Although the current state of "anything big enough gets adapted into multiple formats" and "the internet makes widely-disparate things all accessible in the same place" has kinda blurred the distinctions.)
