It's November/December. If anything, because of holidays and the midterm/end of term work/exams, comments can go down. People may have time to read but not have time to comment because they're simply too stressed.

It's good your hit rate is the same! It looks like people are still enjoying your story. (Who sticks it out to the bitter end... dun dun dun) (Okay, silliness.)

Hope you get some comments soon. They're addictive. I know. It's not you! Though sometimes I wish I could grab people through the internet and go "COMMENT!" myself. But we can't control people like that no matter how hard we try. Sigh. So, you aren't alone? (I don't know if any of this is comforting at all.)

I think one big issue for WIP writers when it comes to comments is that so many people talk about how they don't read or leave comments on fics until they're completed, for a whole host of reasons. So that could be a factor here, too.

(Course, that tends to wind up leading to a vicious cycle sort of situation-readers don't read or comment on WIP fics, writers then stop continuing with the fics because they aren't getting readers/comments, the fics remain incomplete and unread, and on and on it goes.)

Anywho, hopefully you'll get some comments soon, OP.

in any multichapter/multi-segment work, there are chapters that aren't going to be as epic as a standalone work. there are transitional chapters. I've written several lengthy works like this and I'm well aware of it, not every chapter is worth commenting on and that's okay. It doesn't mean your chapter sucks, or that anything about the work overall sucks, it means people are casually riding the train until you hit them with one small thing in a future chapter that really appeals to them and they feel the need to say so.

get used to it, and take comfort that it's normal. it means you're writing something that people are engaged with and some of them may be saving their comment for when a favorite character appears, when someone does something truly impactful, or when the whole thing is over.

Do you reply to your comments? Some readers get discouraged if their comments seems to go unnoticed by the author and they stop bothering to comment at all, while still reading the fic. On the flip side, if you reply to all or most of your comments, more people are likely to comment because they feel reassured that their comment will at least be noticed, even if they don't always receive a reply.

I agree with the comments above as well.

All of this. x1000

The thing is - how many different ways can we say, "I like this"? If we write excitement and praise in one chapter, do we have to match that level for each subsequent chapter? Will it be enough to say, "I'm still enjoying this" for each chapter? Really? If you answer comments, what do you say after the same reader has said, "I'm still enjoying this" for the tenth time, or the fifteenth, or the twentieth? The whole situation is fraught.

This the the main reason I wait until the story is finished to comment. I wish that I could leave kudos on separate chapters, but that's not possible.

It's a catch-22 situation: if the author answers all comments, it decreases time available to write. If the author doesn't answer comments, I don't see why I should bother commenting. I know, the author doesn't owe me a response to my comment. But likewise, I don't owe the author a comment on the story if I feel it's just going to drop into nothingness.

It seems a hell of a tangled situation. We pretty much need to take our satisfaction where we can get it, which in this case is a continuing hit-count. I don't see any other solution.

I get it OP. I've been there. It's always nice to get comments! And it can feel crappy when it seems like your fic is losing steam.

Maybe take a break in general from your fics online? Clear your mind from kudos and comments for awhile. Sometimes I take for granted that some of my favorite writers are updating routinely and not leave comments on every chapter. I don't really give into leaving comments when a writer publicly says they won't update until they get X number of comments, but I do leave a comment or two on a fic if an author hasn't updated in awhile. Not because I think the writer is holding back until they get X number of comments, but just because I want the writer to know that I'm still interested in the fic.

Whatever you decide to do, keep writing and you have gotten some comments, which is awesome!!

Maybe instead of saying "I hate authors who___" say "I hate it when authors___"

While I agree that would be better phrasing, unsolicited advice is often self-serving.

I feel bullied when an author says they won't continue their fic until they get more comments and/or someone asks them to. It's a sure way for me to lose interest in a fic. I dislike WIPs in general but I'll read them if they're updated once in a while.

Some of my fics get no comments at all. That doesn't stop me writing.

Right- so I'll say ignore most of what people have said here.
\
Most of all because you already know it- second of all, because you actually get it.

It's not about saying the same thing every chapter- because there are comments telling how great a story is, and how it develops then and in between. Even being noticed out of the blue reconciles some sort of continuance, even if you didn't expect it when first writing it.

I'm like number one when it comes to flaking out- so I get what it's like to find yourself in a sudden dry patch of commentary.
And as someone who takes literally forever to get back and comment/flaunt over what I love as much as /I wish I could/ hate the idea that my words can influence a fic. The only time my words have been noted have been to the negative, overall. (even when it shouldn't have)
Even when commenting on a fic which advertised 'ten words a review' I knew my 1,000 word comment wouldn't make a difference, even if I hadn't commented a month off the last update.

Basically what I'm /trying/ to say, is that wanting recognition is normal, it's essentially expected. What you're feeling is right, so you fo you, and do you to the best you can- 'cause, words or not you have it, and I sincerely hope you know that.
