Some of the plot threads were a little suggestive, but overt sexual undertones? I think not.
The most explicit thing we see is in the trailer, where one character gives another a rose, then sucks on her finger when it's injured by the thorn, and then when two different characters kiss while roleplaying a prince and a princess. Not even another kiss is shown. Based on the time and place the game occurs in, it's likely that the characters were involved in romantic friendships instead of any sexual relationships, and there's really no indication that anyone is having sex. (There's subtext that one or two characters may have been being abused, but it's played up as damaging, not hawt.)

tl;dr: The game's rated M, and rightfully so, but hentai? No way.

My strongest memory of that game is the part where the children give her the red crayon, then disappear and reappear with masks over their heads, start crawling all over her and... well. It was very, very squicky back then, and it feels very squicky for me now.

There was also the feeling that one of the girls were very emotionally attached to the player character and was very upset that the girl liked a dog better than her, and that was kind of weird too. It was those scenes and the general feeling that there is SOMETHING very odd going on that led me to make that remark: while there may not be that much OPEN sex, that much I admit, there were definitely to me a sensation of a lot of dysfunctional 'closeness' going on in that place.

I definitely agree that a lot of parts were squicky. Not debating you on that, this IS a horror game. Squicky isn't necessarily pervertedly squicky, though- the game IS based on Jennifer's perceptions of the orphanage from when she was there as a child. (You've gotten to the Once Upon A Time chapter, right?)

My impression of Wendy was that she was an incredibly insecure person who was worried that if Jennifer formed relationships with other people, she'd like them better, or worse, she'd stop liking Wendy at all. It's not unheard of for people to be jealous over their best friends, even if it's healthier to get over feelings like that. Wendy took that to an extreme, but that doesn't mean that anything more than an innocent crush, or a roleplay of a relationship, or a romantic friendship was taking place. And whatever went on between those two is a lot less squicky once you remember that at the time the events actually happened, there wasn't an age difference.

As for dysfunctional closeness: yes, yes, and more yes. That was definitely taking place there, and it was definitely responsible for quite a bit of the squick. The place was an orphanage, and the members of the staff didn't seem to be filling any kind of parental role in the orphans' lives. Because of that, we have orphans, who probably come already screwed up from losing their parents, forming the only close relationships they have with each other. Wendy being so afraid of losing Jennifer that she tries to force Jennifer to love only her is dysfunctional. Diana alternately hurting and taking care of Meg is dysfunctional, and Meg being blindly devoted to Diana is dysfunctional, too. But the relationships between the characters aren't dysfunctionally close because of sexuality. They're just as bad without it.

...Am I weird that I see/ship them as having just romantic friendships, and didn't think anyone was actually doing stuff there?
