101. That irritates me sometimes as well. "Itadakimasu" I can usually deal with, but "tadaima!" and "o kaeri!" could pretty easily be "I'm home!" and "Welcome home!" :| I know I've had to explain that sort of crap to my school's anime club before.

141. People need to get over themselves at let fun things remain fun. Don't worry about what the internet tough guys think. 146. I think they hate him because he actually looks unambiguously male, lol. 152. It's not that strange, really. My sister's like that. She never reads fic or anything. (Of course, this may be a good thing because she's never struck with Fandom Inferiority Syndrome, AKA "someone's already written this and anything I try will faaaaail!" so when she wants to write fic, she just does it. I'm the one more likely to BAAAW for a while and then give up, XD.)

154. Secrets like this make me really wonder what it means to be a furry to furries. Because I feel the furries and the non-furries define this in different ways, and then there are the (it seems) fringe groups of furries (the having fursuit sex kind) who, as a vivid case, create a stereotype of the subculture that colors the mainstream population's view of furries. So yeah, I guess I just don't really understand what being a furry means between the extremes. Just curious.

I imagine being a furry is probably like being part of any other fandom that has a name and is well-known in the media or online. You've got your quiet fans who just like the source material and aren't really into much beyond that, all the way up to the crazy people who are constantly at conventions in costumes and believe they're really a(n) animal/Jedi/Starfleet Officer/Sailor Senshi/whatever. Furries seem to have it a bit worse because of the blatant sexual nature of the most extreme sort of furry fandom.

I mean, someone who is an extreme Trekkie people will generally just pity and see as a little pathetic... but once sex enters the picture, a lot of people see that as reason to get uptight and superior attitudes, and that leads to hatred, it seems. They get the attitude of "Well, I may like BDSM, but at least I don't get off to *insert fetish here*".

This probably sounds stupid, but when we're talking the source material of the furry fandom, we mean anthropomorphic art, right?
I've never really talked much with anyone who considers him/herself "a furry," so I'm just trying to make a little effort to understand instead of jumping onto the hatewagon. XD

Not the anon up there, but yep! Being a furry is basically just liking anthopomorphic characters. Across the board, I'd think -- it's possible for someone to like a couple of them without being a furry, like it's possible for someone to like a few Star Trek characters or episodes without being a Trekkie. But if you love anthropomorphic animals, series with them, write them, or draw them, then you're a furry. People take this to major extremes, like fursuits and thinking they are animals/relating to animals, but they're not the definition, whereas a lot of people seem to think they are, or that it's a package deal.

I'm a furry. I do tend to love anthropomorphic animals, and I'd probably draw them if I could draw. I love stories with them in it and had an idea for a few stories with them (no sex). I definitely have crushes on some anthro characters the same way I would any other character, and ship them, but it's their human characteristics that are attractive, not the fact that they're not human. If I have a major thing for Basil of Baker Street, it's because he's Basil of Baker Street, not because he's a mouse (most mice don't dress and act like a twitchier version of Sherlock Holmes >_>), and it doesn't mean I'm attracted to mice. Sweeping generalizations made by furry-haters tend to be really sweeping. XD

B-but yes, I hope that helps? Kind of just. How someone in the more normal but not totally non-shipping/non-crush area of the fandom thinks. I just hope it made some kind of sense. ;;

Okay, I have to thank you for this explanation. I've really always wondered exactly what a furry is. But I never wanted a biased answer from both sides so I never knew who to go asking. You've really explained this well, thank you. It makes a lot more sense now.

No, it definitely made sense. I've definitely run into some of the "I believe I have some kind of kinship with --insert animal here--" types on devART, so that was what I usually thought of when anyone said "Oh yeah, I'm a furry." Thanks a lot for that explanation of the more run-of-the-mill type, I really do appreciate it. :D

Your definition of "Furry" and my definition of it are a bit different. The fandom has an entire spectrum of different types of people across the board, and mine is no where near your definition. I'm technically not even in the fandom, but merely on the sidelines into the whole thing for spiritual beliefs only.

I guess you could say I'm a bit more of a conservative furry while the fursuiters and such are the more liberal ones. It's all about how you yourself view the term. The people who hate just refuse to look into the whole subject from multiple views.

Not trying to say your definition was wrong to the person, just saying our views are different. I do thank you for going in and talking through the comments, though.
