132. You know, it's okay with me that you find him boring, but don't tell ME why I like him. I don't find him boring. I find him really, really interesting. His family problems, personal conflicts, religious conflicts, canonical kinkiness and family history interest me. I like the way he interacts with the kids on the show and generally tends to defend them. All of this may be boring for you, but it interests me. Sure, I like the way he looks, but the second thing I hear out of every butthurt fan of some other supporting character's mouth, right after "omg people are so ---ist, they don't like my favourite character enough" is "but Cameron/Foreman/whoever they like is HOT!!!" In point of fact there are no un-hot recurring characters on House, so you cannot blame the fact that some of them are more popular than others on their hotness or lack thereof. (OK, I don't think Taub is that hot, but I'm sure somebody out there does. However, Jesse Spencer, Omar Epps, Jennifer Morrison, Olivia Wilde and Kal Penn are all SCORCHINGLY hot, ergo, you cannot say that the fact I like Chase, 13 and Kutner much better than Cameron and Foreman has to do with their hotness or lack thereof. And in fact I like Taub, even though I do not think that he is that hot. Everybody on House is good-looking.)

NS!2: The reason that people judge Ginny for her sexual behaviour is not that she has large numbers of past partners; it's that she dated boys who really liked her while secretly using them all as stepping stones to get to her ultimate goal of being with Harry Potter. That is skeevy and I'm sure she didn't say to them all, "I know you like me, and I like you okay, but really I like Harry more, and I need to pretend that I'm over him so he won't think I'm a freak who's still emotionally stuck at the age of 10." I don't think her behaviour would have been OK if she were a boy. You may not like the word "slut" because it is typically applied to women and not men. And I'd even agree with you about that. But we need a word--not a nice word, because this kind of behaviour isn't nice--for people who engage in dishonest, deceptive, dishonourable sexual behaviour. "Slut" tends to be the default because most people who do this shit are promiscuous, but many of them aren't, and many promiscuous people are honest and pleasant. People who cheat on their significant others, people who sleep with their friends' partners without permission, people who pretend they like you more than they really do in order to get you to take off your pants--there needs to be a word for this. I would like it to be gender-neutral, and not used specifically to shame women. But until we come up with such a word, there are going to be people who use the word "slut" not to shame women as a whole but because they need something to call this kind of crappy behaviour. And many people who use the word this way use it to describe men, too.

And yes, Ginny was just a kid. That makes the wrong things she did understandable and forgivable, assuming she's better behaved as an adult. It doesn't make them not wrong. We all do wrong things starting out in dating, very few people manage to get it right the first time and never hurt anyone or never be dishonest. But it's still wrong, and we don't see enough of her as an adult to have any idea how or if she changed.

I think the word for the person who engages in that kind of behavior is "skeeze," or at least, that's the way we used it back in undergrad. It's kind of a combo of skank and sleeze, and it was applied without respect to gender. I think it works.

"Skeeze" is a good word. It needs to become more popular.

Seriously, I do not think most of the people who dislike Ginny for being skeezy in HBP (which she was, and Ron was, and Hermione also was--really, there was no-one in that book who remained terribly likeable--I felt sorry for Lavender, sorry for Michael Corner and only not sorry for McLaggen because he was obviously a jerk himself) think she has been with 100+ men.

It's just skeezy, sleazy, skanky, &c to act like you're serious about someone when you're planning to get with someone else at the first available opportunity. Unless you've had the FWB talk and are being honest about it: "Hey, I'm not your dream girl and you're not my dream guy, but we're friends and we could get off together," but I doubt that was the case. JKR's grasp of relationship possibilities seems to be pretty limited.

Wow. I feel kind of sorry for you that you got that from these books.

But then all I know about you I learnt form Fandom Wank, so I guess I'm not surprised!

Because THAT'S a reliable source.

Dude, I *wish* I got the books that were actually good that some people seem to have received, but in point of fact, the last two books of the series that I got sucked ass. More confusingly, I checked them against copies owned by people who liked them and they contained THE EXACT SAME TEXT!!! Life is weird.

No, not weird, it's easily explained. You have some screwed up biases, and you can't read for context very well.

But if it makes you feel happier and superior blaming the books, please continue :)
