Spirit is an amazing father, and it irks me that Maka doesn't appreciate that he's at least TRYING to be there for her. Infidelity be damned, at least her father is THERE for her! My boyfriend grew up without a father, let alone a decent father figure, and I know he feels the same. He'd probably verbally bitch-slap Maka if he met her in real life.

I think they basically just deconstructed the whole mad scientist thing by deciding to put one in with the "good guys." And when you take that character type and remove the need to be menacing or scary while following their inner lives more closely... Well, you basically have a Fucked-Up Nerd. And within the population of people who would be online downloading and following cartoons, you have a lot of Nerds, many of which are Fucked-Up Nerds. I'm one of these myself, so Stein is kind of an important character to me.
And I think Spirit and Maka are kind of like how Hughes and his kid would be in a few years. XD I bet there'll be some cute moment close to the end of the series where she finally accepts him and he freaks out from happiness in an adorable fashion. ^^

YES, though I think his daughter, whose name escapes me, would be more appreciative of her father's antics. Just 'cause. :3

And yeah, she seems like she'd be a lot less sassy than Maka. Though I find Maka's sternness kind of adorable. (I do feel bad for Spirit, though. But that's all part of the general effect!)
