Okay, there are some very limited rules to avoid PLAGIARISM.

1) Do not copy passages directly from the book.
2) It's better to be an AU so you aren't lifting world building.
2a) create own world building if possible. (My problem with fanfic, I've got so much made up world building, dang it, I might as well go Original.)
2b) Or do a 50 Shades and put in normal world if supernatural/scifi/fantasy inspired.
3) Change character names/appearances/perhaps personalities slightly. (Though appearances can be optional, see Mortal Instruments and some of the other HP fanfics that got turned into original.)
4) Create your own plot line unless you're using general genre tropes or the very basic Hero's Journey (well, that's actually a good genre trope in itself so like the Hero's Journey.)
5) Profit.

I have a ... wizard school MG/YA series, a NA College Magitech spy thriller series, a Space Opera vaguely DBZ inspired series, a human only scifi solarpunk very vaguely FFX inspired series... all WIP. No writing is wasted. No fandom is wasted.

Look prior to copyright, Dante wrote a self-insert story where he went to hell. Lewis wrote "What if Jesus created different worlds." After copyright, well 50 Shades is fanfic of fanfics of Twilight. So... there you go. And the 101 rip offs of Twilight/The Hunger Games are cringeworthy but follow the same formula. Some started as fanfic, others didn't. Any Sherlock adaptations are fanfic. Any fairy tale retelling is fan fic. (Oh Guilty and so is Mercedes Lackey.) Have fun with it! Good luck!

These are some very valuable tips, thank you! And basically, your last paragraph is why I see nothing wrong with fanfic.

You're welcome!

The original fiction people can be so pretentious. It's a concept maybe 100 years old. -Has a Christopher PR "blood orange" moment- Fan Fiction, older than dirt and proud of it. LOL
