I've been rewatching the making of documentaries and i truly believe that we'll never see another film series made like LoTR was.

The passion of the people involved is just extraordinary.

Did you see the news article about the cast putting together a thing to try to buy Tolkien's house to turn it into a museum? His house is on the market, and they are trying to pull together the money with fan support and such to get it turned into a museum to the man and his work as a thank you to him because he wrote the book that was turned into the movie that became so important to them. I was super impressed with them for that.

Also super shocked his house wasn't already a museum.

I spotted it on a reddit LoTR meme sub of all places.

I'm shocked on a number of levels.

1. That the incredibly wealthy Tolkien estate won't purchase it.
2. That i was naive enough to think that the Tolkien estate would purchase it.

I hope they get the money together because it deserves preservation.

He lived in a bunch of places, none of which are particularly interesting, and they're all a bit small to be practical to run as museums, IMO.

It was the home he had in Oxford which is more than large enough.

I'm just confused at what they'd fill it with? If it's up on the market that means that it's been lived in by another family for a good amount of time. I can't imagine there being anything related to Tolkien left.

I suppose you could do something with early editions and manuscripts in theory, but tbh it's quite hard to do literary museums well. The Tolkiens downsized quite dramatically when he retired and they went to Eastbourne (and he spent the last years of his life in a college room in Merton), so I suspect most of his possessions were dispersed a long time ago.

I looked into it and i have to say a big fucking YIKES.

'With proper funding, the group wants to renovate the house to what it would have looked like during Tolkien’s ownership, and would renovate the upstairs to “reflect the cultures he invented” while the “garden would be restored to a beauty of which the inventor of Sam Gamgee would be proud'.
So not a true reflection of what the house was like and a garden that they think looks pretty.

Once established, the center would hold a series of “retreats, writing seminars and other cultural events,” as well as a series of virtual programs.

So it's not a museum that anyone will be able to visit.

It's going to be a smarmy writers retreat/hotel that also hosts parties.

Oh please pay us millions to make a Tolkien hotel.

Lmao.

Ouch. I was thinking more like restoring it to what it would have looked like in his day for people to do walk throughs. Well that sucks.
