The reason recasts are such a sin, generally speaking, is that someone will take a doll made by a doll artist, make molds of the parts, and then... well, re-cast them, and sell them, undercutting the artist.

OP's recasts aren't dolls that are currently on the market, so I can see how some consider that a grey area, but every bjd company is a very small venture, and there are artists who have stopped producing work because of the recast market, so... it's a subject that the community gets passionate about.

(and I don't believe *most* people who are pro-artist in public are privately pro-recast, honestly... every time someone uses 'most people would do this' as a justification I side-eye)

Honestly anon, I wouldn't have believed it before myself but after befriending some pretty Big Names in the hobby and finding out just how little it takes for them to admit that "under certain circumstances...", I get the feeling there's a lot more nuance to the sentiment than just "NEVER EVER".

For my particular dolls...these dolls are fandom wide holy grails. People befriend the artist(s) specifically to try and get close enough to them to possibly be MAYBE sometime in their lifetime be CONSIDERED for one of the sculpts. The artist(s) have literally zero intention to sell their dolls in any kind of pre-order fashion and pretty clearly love how coveted their dolls are and how much money the one that they sell every blue moon (or the aftermarket ones that sell) go for.

The chance of owning one of these dolls in any kind of legit manner are long, long gone, and unless you're rich enough to drop like 10+ grand there's almost no way to even begin to get one.

Trust me when I say that there are a LOT of people who would have these dolls as a "...except that one" on their "no recasts" stance. They're just that popular and rare.

Regarding mine though, they would never ever be sold or gifted to anybody not in our little group. If any of us decided we didn't want ours anymore we've committed to either gifting them to someone else in the group or destroying our copies. We might not agree fully with the way the artist(s) do "business" (this is one of those cases where issues of elitism and stuff have some place behind the scenes drama wise), but we would never ever allow their works to get into the hands of anybody who sought to make a profit off of them. Just making these dolls cost my friends about $600 for all materials involved (which they were all happy to chip in for considering how stupid-rare the sculpts are), and all of them are BJD artists themselves or involved in peripheral "goods" (clothes, etc) we know what goes into making them.

It was just a literal once in a lifetime chance for a couple of people not rich enough to drop 10k on a single sculpt to get a chance to play with their dolly grails in private. I was the recipient of a bunch of very generous friends and got a chance to own one too. :)
