(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 02:04 am (UTC)(link)I loved Elizabeth. She was honestly the only first season character I liked. It was too bad she was stuck pulling Rodney and Shepherd back from doing really stupid things that the narrative kept saying were somehow right when the narrative should be siding with her.
Ronan was cool as well when he came along.
Teyla became much more likable once she started getting more interesting storylines.
But Rodney and Shepherd just never grew out of their act before they think childishness that the narrative kept rewarding.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 09:38 am (UTC)(link)I think it was just these episodes that didn't show her in a good light for my taste. See, there's this great fic that has influenced how I see Rodney and the dynamics surrounding him. It's about how Rodney is treated really badly by the people on Atlantis. He is bad setting boundaries, constantly complains but never actually says no. Rodney is always available and does whatever is asked of him, so the people around him ignore even his justified complaints completely and take advantage, often being demanding and disrespectful. And this dynamic wasn't made up, it is there in the show, you just don't really notice.
In those episodes I watched, it was really present. Rodney is at no point ridiculous or stupid or a coward, all his complaints and fears are valid. He works harder and longer than anyone else, is understandably cranky from the pressure and stress, visibly exhausted – and in the end saves the city. And still Elizabeth and Teyla are snide with him. :/
(The fic is The Outside Point of View by LitGal:

The main character is a cool OC and it's generally a great and deservedly popular fic. I don't know if you want to read fic for a show you didn't like but Shepherd's childish behavior is a main point in this one and he gets called out on it, so it might actually be of interest for you.)

(Anonymous) 2020-12-10 06:54 am (UTC)(link)Weir had a crappy grasp of military chain of command for a diplomatic leader and made some terrible choices that damaged the stability of Sheppard's leadership (re: Bates). Meanwhile, Sheppard risked a court martial to back Weir and protect the City when Everett showed up. Weir wasn't a very good leader imo. Her heart was in the right place, but she kept making rookie mistakes. Like berating people in front of everyone instead of taking it private. Or how about the fact she didn't appear to know the rules of engagement.
I think her shining moment was the negotiations for the nukes with the Genii. That was when I really respected her skills. I think she would have made a better diplomat than expedition leader.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 02:06 am (UTC)(link)I wish I'd stopped watching. But Stargate was the thing my dad and I did together. We watched every episode of SG1 together, so when Atlantis started we continued with that. I didn't want to give up that time together, even though I hated the show. I moved out around the end of season 4, so I stopped watching at that point.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)And yes they are both sooo obnoxious ... but i still love them. Especially Rodney. I would probably strangle a person like him irl but as a character it works for me. I also find that he gets better down the line (character development and all that)
