I'm with you, OP. To be completely honest, I see pretty much all of my "ships" this way (I use quotes there because I've seen differing opinions about whether it even counts as a ship if you don't want them to bang) and it definitely gets lonely when everyone else is all about the porn. Even fics on AO3 tagged as asexual usually have a ton of sex. (And yes, I know some asexual people are fine with having sex, but a lot AREN'T, and I almost never see that depicted in fics.)

I loose interest as soon as they hook up. I like pre slash.

Either I must be blocking all the right people from previous fandom experiences or you must be hanging around the wrong parts, OP, because I've been in the GO fandom for more than a year, at this point, actively participating with my content and interacting with others, and not once I've ever seen someone getting angry about other people interpreting them as ace. The only reactions I've seen to that headcanon have been wholly welcoming and positive.

That said, yeah, there's a lot of sexual content too, but also... Fanarts or works of them being cuddly without going into horny territory are aplenty, so idk what you mean when you say that everyone is constantly horny on main.

We must be engaging with fan content for this ship in completely different places because my experience with this fandom seems to have been the completely opposite of yours???

What you're describing has been my experience with GO fandom as well. And honestly, GO is one of the least horny fandoms I've been in in a long time. That's not to say there isn't plenty of explicit content, but there's way more T, GA, and Gen fic for GO than there's been for most of my other fandoms.

It is possible to really curate your fandom experience such that you don't see things that are endemic in other areas of the fandom. I'm in the Les Mis fandom and I take care to curate my fandom experience because there are certain things about the fandom that I actively dislike and don't want to see. It took me a bit of time to figure out who to follow/unfollow to make sure I was only seeing what I wanted and not being bombarded with the stuff I didn't want to see; sometimes I see a post by someone who clearly follows folks I don't, complaining about the exact stuff I've largely cleared off my dash, but I don't see that stuff myself most of the time.

Editing to say I wonder if you are hanging with the older fans and that's why they're less horny and more welcoming of alternate viewpoints? I've seen some astoundingly horny GO stuff on my own dash and it seems to largely be the teens who are posting it. When the tv series had JUST come out, I do also remember seeing a few posts of people being mad that Neil Gaiman was cool with all interpretations of Aziraphale and Crowley, rather than officially stating that they were cis gay men. There was a definite tone of aphobia in those posts' wording, I remember it because it was so fucking weird to me as a (casual) pre-tv series GO fan.

I'm middle-aged and I've been around since the book fandom days and there was certainly horny art and fic around then too (I wrote some of it and still do, I'm one of the horny on main ones). But also a lot of non-sexual art and fic too.

Just don't assume it's the teens being horny necessarily - in my experience in multiple fandoms it's the teens who seem most likely to be judgmental about sexual content, especially when it's made by older people. (NOT saying OP is).

It's all fine with me, and I'm glad Gaiman said that, I don't want ace people to feel excluded - or anyone.

I definitely see them both as asexual.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see them as asexual because even that seems like too human a concept. I'm struggling to find a term for them that spans the nature of the connection between two immortal beings.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally I do ship them with a sexual relationship, which IMO they could enjoy because they like life on Earth and doing (some) things the "human way". But I have also read and enjoyed fic where it's an asexual romantic relationship, because it doesn't really occur to them to do sexual things, since they aren't actually corporeal beings. And then I've read (and written) weird metaphysical shit involving trueforms and ethereal/occult planes, and I think that might be my favorite of all!

That fanart is adorable. I also view both of them as asexual and that's my preferred way of shipping them. I don't really engage with the fandom though outside of reading some fic and looking at art. It just didn't pull me in.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
So you still consider it shipping? The first comment under this secret is me, and I find it frustrating how there's not really a consensus on terms. I mean, I generally think of it as shipping, but then I'll make some comment about shipping it, and people will suddenly start talking about sex, and I'm like "oh, yeah, maybe what I do isn't shipping after all", but if it's not, I don't know what word to use. (I know this is dumb, but I just get annoyed when there aren't clear words/definitions for things.)

Nayrt

I still think it's shipping. Two or more beings in a relationship, with or without sex, is a ship.

I've seen talk about them being asexual in my corners of fandom, so it's not just you!

Here's a collection of Ace-Friendly Fics, if you're still looking:

A fandom Oldie in my 30s and SAME. Like I don't give a crap what young folks do, but I've recently learned to stay in my cave again and embrace my fandom love from a distance because I got fed up with the overt level of pointless needling/yelling/baseless assumption (why do internet users always default to yelling even if it's innocuous instead of trying to be helpful and politely explain?) over Whatever. I am immensely grateful for the friends I made who are closer or within my age range through fandom.

There's a whole Ace Omens Discord server (run by Kedreeva - kedreeva.tumblr.com), if there's not a valid link to the server on their blog you can ask them. Guaranteed not to get horny on main (there's a nsfw section, but it's locked under a separate access role and you will never see that if you don't want to), and guaranteed not to get hissy at you if you read them as ace. <3

(Anonymous) 2020-12-06 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, OP! You're not the only one!

(Anonymous) 2020-12-06 12:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not even in this fandom, but it always, well, kind of annoys me when people complain about there being too much sex for a particular pairing and that they see the characters' love as PURE AND TRUE AND DEEP AND INTERNAL. As if that's somehow superior. As if you can't have both. And, most importantly, as if fandom has ever not been about wanting to imagine hot people banging each other.

Ship them how you want to ship them, OP, but being horny on main is not some sort of failure of the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2020-12-06 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Same here.
