The whole Tom thing in Daria. I would have warmed up to him better had they not intended to cause drama by making him come between two best friends. Just... eww. Ugh. No.

If Daria was going to have a boyfriend he should have been some nerdy gothy guy anyway.

I used to hate the Tom element of seasons 4 and 5 of Daria, but I've come around to say it's a mixed bag.

I think I was adverse to it because I related so much to Daria it pissed me off that Daria would kiss Tom and betray Jane like that.

But as an adult, ho boy...yeah. Like, the world is complicated. Humans are complicated. Life has a lot of grey areas and it's OK to mess up from time to time, and Daria needed to learn that.

I think it's possible that for a lot of teens like Daria who have a rather strict moral compass to be unprepared for unexpected feelings to develop and not know that shit can often just happen. A lot of times you do things without intending to hurt anyone and yet it happens. And that happens a lot when we are teens/entering college and adulthood.

I just don't like Tom as a character. But then at the same time...it is really true that a lot of girls tend to date guys who aren't quite good enough for them. "Dating down" was how my sister described it, and it's not like girls/young women are aware that they're doing that; the world sets us up to expect less and settle for less. Tom was definitely above the rest of Daria's peers at Lawndale High, but he's still just kind of an average dude that Daria (and Jane) was too good for. But he makes sense as Daria's first boyfriend.

I don't disagree, I just don't think the writers handled it well. I know there are gray areas in life, but in terms of the story, I feel like the writers FORCED something in there that didn't quite work. All to get that drama. I can give points for effort, but it didn't feel true to the show.

AYRT
Agreed! I appreciate the attempt but the execution really sucked. I always felt like the whole "Tom and Jane are bored so Tom develops a crush on Daria" part the most convoluted and underdeveloped. The Homecoming episode wasn't enough to make it plausible.
