Re: Pleasant Fandom Surprises

The Tolkien fandom on Tumblr surprised me when I join and continually surprises me. Best fandom I've ever been a part of. I was not expecting it at all. I was expecting gatekeeping, Cliques with movie fandom and book fandom being separate (maybe even LOTR-only fans and Silm fans being separate cliques too), people arguing over interpretation and insisting the other people were wrong, ship wars, and all the things I'd come to expect from a fandom.

Instead, I found a welcoming fandom who accepts everyone, who is happy for varied interpretations, where you get everything from serious discussions to shipping to character love to complete crack and memes, where I found my niche and somehow became known in the fandom? Anyway, I love my fandom and it it still a surprising place that makes me very happy.

Tolkien fandom on Facebook is a slightly different story.
