I'll disagree because she should have told her daughter the moment Qin-Su showed interest in him at all, way before any engagement was made and then Qin-Su could have retracted her interest without any issue. There is no good reason why her mother didn't say anything other than the writer wanted JGY's story to be even more fucked up.

I'm going to be annoyed she, as well as several other women, were thrown under the bus for men in this canon. It's irritating.

Somewhat overlooking the cultural context there. JGY was eligible and Qin Su's rejection of him could have been turned into a political incident or lowered the standing of her family.

But JGY wasn't considered eligible? His parentage was constantly used against him and he was considered lower than other commoners, he even expresses surprise and delight that Qin-Su actually likes him, if she had retracted her interest I can't see many people caring and it would have landed on his head rather than hers. More fuel to talk smack about him and all, which could have been used to pull his character down further.

Uh yes he was and it was even remarked on by Bicao when she reveals it to the assembly. He had been acknowledged as a son of the Jin clan leader and was exppected to hold a good position. Even though people still made a lot of his parentage, a rejection still could have been construed as a rejection of the Jin clan.
