Were they thick in the fic or are they thick IRL?

Certainly thick in the fic. I don't know enough about them irl to judge.

It was one of those favorite-author-jumps-ship to new fandom deals. She was a good writer and I loved her work, so I tried to read her 1D stuff. ...Yeah. Read around a little to see if it was just her take on them and no, fic has them as pretty airheaded.

Lol. Once I was browsing ao3 by looking at all the fics site-wide with the most kudos or hits or something like that, and I saw a 1D fic with a truly insane number of hits, so out of curiosity I checked it out. They weren't exactly thick, but... the characters were so bland and devoid of personality that they could have been literally anyone. Didn't help that it was an au where they were just normal people. Granted I don't know jack about 1D and everyone's personalities, but... none of the characters /had/ personalities in this fic and it leads me to believe the author only wrote the story with the member's of 1D's names stuck in just to amass the sheer volume of feedback they got.

I don't mind one direction, really enjoy a few of their songs. But I love Harry Styles' solo music. I tried out of interest to peruse some one direction fics but couldn't get into them at all. The characters all acted like bratty kids. In particular, Harry Styles, who from what I gather, even from an early age was mature for his age came as a frightened little boy. And this was in more than one fic.

Ngl, this is what I loved about random. There are some stories you can only really tell when all of your characters are idiots.
