She's British. And while I'd agree that in the U.S. there's been a great deal of shitty things done via the government, it'd be very, very, VERY foolish to base one's suspicions on modern vaccinations upon that. My ancestors were treated badly in the historical context of building railroads. Guess what? I'm all for modern public mass transit infrastructure. You know, because I'm not stupid.

The British thing is a workable point, but the "it's not happening now" argument is horseshit.

You learn from your parents, who learn from their parents, who learn from their parents. If your parents and their parents were medically abused, they're going to teach you distrust from the moment you're born (and not without cause). That's not negligible. It's freakin' foundational. The shit you learn as a kid sticks, especially fear and even moreso fear your parents instill in you.

The argument you're using is the same as all the people who say "So what if slavery happened! It isn't happening to you now so it shouldn't effect you at all!"

DA

And I mean, black people and particularly black women in the US still receive questionable medical care even to this day. This is documented. So their generational trauma gets compounded by continued abuse... it's a hella complicated situation.

Letitia Wright isn't American though, that is true.

Except ayrt never said "it's not happening now". That was you. Ayrt quite rightly pointed out that there's a rational, clear-cut difference between the abuses of the black population in the U.S. and the existence of modern vaccines for dangerous diseases that can kill people. One can accept that there would be some legitimate wariness of medicine in general. But letting one's very legitimate concerns and fears about past abuses blind you to the necessity of a vaccine for a very dangerous virus that could kill you or cause longterm health issues would be a very bad idea.

Fortunately, most pepole can tell the difference and they don't need to hedge around with "omg what are we putting in our boooooodies" which is a textbook whine from the "I'm not an anti-vaxxer, but..." anti-vaxx crowd.

There are legit reasons to be wary of this vaccine, though. Some of the people who have had it (perfectly healthy people without any underlying health problems) have had very bad reactions to it and that's concerning. As someone with an autoimmune disease who is at much higher risk of bad reactions than the ordinary person, I'm not going to be getting it because the last thing I need is for it to trigger a serious flare up and cause me months of major health issues.

no one's going to see this but FOR FUCKS SAKE

the people who had bad allergic reactions to it have a history of extremely sensitive allergic reactions and carry epi-pens on themselves already because of that

EVERY VACCINE including the current 2020 influenza vaccines if you want current cite-able information, carry a warning about allergic reactions to reagent contents.

If you're allergic to other vaccines and allergic to the carrier agents in the covid vaccine, then you should by all means discuss with your doctor what options may be available to you once more than three of the covid vaccine candidates are approved for public use. Writing it off this early is potentially exposing yourself to death or a lifetime of serious complications from covid. Know your facts. Don't get fearful just because someone somewhere said "a couple people had bad reactions" without explaining it fully.

they're not talking about allergic reactions, they're talking about autoimmune stuff, which is a different issue. my sister has lupus and she can't even get flu shots because they cause her autoimmune issues (which are normally mostly controlled via meds and lifestyle management) to kick up and it can take weeks or even months to get them back under control again even with the meds, and in the meantime she's pretty severely debilitated. things like tetanus shots and the meningitis shot, meanwhile, didn't give her any problems at all.

for people like that, it's not a matter of being "fearful," it's a matter of having to weigh the potential risks should the vaccine send their autoimmune disease into overdrive.

Yes, people with some medical conditions need to be careful about vaccines. This is well-known, not part of vaccine trials, and absolutely not what Letitia Wright was saying.

nice red herring bro

(Anonymous) 2020-12-11 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Your analogy is dumb anyway. The abuse of your ancestors wasn't about railroads but the exploitation of immigrant labor. Which you should absolutely be wary of even today.
