110) Um....Japanese Imperialism of the early 20th century......?

Also, given that the writing, architecture, facial features, clothing and art of the Fire Nation are all obviously and heavily Asian-influenced, I'm having a little trouble seeing where you're coming from on this.

[identity profile] revulo.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You thought Japanese? I was thinking Chinese. Perhaps a mixture of both.

There's no final "g" sound in Japanese; all Japanese words end in "n" or a vowel. So, I'm with you.

I think the cultural trappings and architecture are mostly Chinese, actually. But the Fire Nation's political relationship with the Earth Kingdom reminds me more of Japan and China, respectively, before WWII. Though of course it's a very LOOSE analogy, I doubt the staff was trying to make a political statement.

The Earth Nation is China. Hence the square-in-circle emblem and the palace in Ba Sing Se being modeled after the palace at the Forbidden City in Beijing.

But some women of BSS also wear outfits that seem to be inspired by the Korean hanbok. I'm one of those that subscribe to the theory of a nice mixture of everything.

It's a mixture, but not an even one. The different Nations are more majorly influenced by different countries.

No one's claiming that the Water Nation isn't most predominantly Inuit, for example.

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
That's true. There is, I believe, a little more wiggle room with the other three Nations however. At most you can pinpoint a specific detail and say that it was inspired by such and such, or that one Nation is predominantly influenced by a certain culture. I think it's nice that the creators went for an eclectic mix; it would be disappointing if a fantasy culture were just a perfect mirror of something that already exists.

I agree with you completely. :)

I always thought the Fire Nation was the Chinese since the Chinese emperors claimed to be descendants of dragons and the Fire Nation emperors had close ties to the dragons as well as everything on the show is written in ancient Chinese and the clothing and much of the architecture are based on the Han Dynasty.

Even much of the scenery is based on real life places in China that the show's artists have traveled to.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think any of the countries lend to an easy one-to-one relationship with an actual Asian country, which I think is the strength of the show.

However, the actual traits that the OP cited reminded me of Japan—as did the portrayal of the Fire Nation as an industrialized island nation that uses sea power and technology to conquer its larger neighbors.

This.

The Chinese were and are a huge industrial nation and have been for thousands of years. They invented everything a conquering and exploring nation needs; gunpowder (which were turned into bombs), the compass, casting iron, hand cannon, Lóu chuán or navel vessals (The Japan did not form their first
Imperial Navy until the 19th century. There were smaller ones that invaded Korea but they were not emperor backed.) and leeboards. They were also master map makers. Again, something the Japanese were not.

In fact, it was Japanese who closed off their borders and didn't want to have anything to do with the outside world in 1639 until 1854.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean to say it couldn't be China, only that it reminded me of Japan in the late 19th and early 20th c. The larger point, that these traits don't have to be a Western country, I think we've proven. That is, I'm not arguing with you, except to say that I don't think the countries in Avatar all have a one to one relationship with a specific modern Asian country—they clearly borrowed a lot of things from a lot of places. The Fire Nation can be a lot of things.
ext_6866: (Might as well be in Chinese)

[identity profile] sistermagpie.livejournal.com 2009-01-08 03:25 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's what I thought too regarding the Fire Nation.

[identity profile] ali-wildgoose.livejournal.com 2009-01-07 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I'd absolutely agree! The main similarity I see between the FN and Japan is its imperialism, pretty much everything else seems explicitly Chinese, with the exception of the Sun Warriors.
