Except that South Park got it right. South Park skewers all religions, from Catholics to Mormons to Protestants to Jews to Muslims, etc., and out of all the religious satire episodes, only the Scientology episode got the "This is what Scientologists actually believe!" treatment, because it's the only
"religion" where the truth is more funny than parody or satirical exaggeration.

I know, I remember watching that episode and thinking, "nah, they're just kidding. No one can really believe all this crap," but then I looked it up - several times to make sure - and was flabberghasted to see that they were telling the truth.

Sad, sad world we live in.

The problem is that people aren't told about Xenu etc until they've been members for years. The initial hook isn't that you're covered with the souls of dead aliens, it's that Scientology can fix all your problems and make you happy (and make you not gay). By then they've made a huge emotional and financial investment in the cult and are more susceptible to believing whatever they're told.

This. Seriously, the Xenu thing is weird and all, but harping on that just makes Scientology seem silly rather than dangerous. Nobody believes in Xenu because they think it sounds reasonable, they believe it because they've been aggressively brainwashed and cut off from any sane influences.

Exactly. I think it's good to make that knowledge public because it will hopefully keep people away. But it doesn't help the people already caught up in the cult and it can lead to others looking down on them, which is going to be even more hurtful.

I actually didn't know that, but I'm not surprised. Cults usually do things that way. It makes me sad, though. I really thought that a lot of the actors that I've found out were Scientologists were smarter than that.

Then again, it is Hollywood. :/

I found out about the Xenu thing before discovering the way the cult functioned as well. It really is sad, isn't it? Jason Lee ;__;

Famous people are treated differently by Scientology than non-famous people, mainly because they give the cult legitimacy. So maybe that's why so many smart actors get sucked in? I don't know. But it's depressing.

Thank you for the link. I'm only half-way through but it's an incredible story. To read what he went through is heartbreaking and I'm so glad he has his own life back.

No worries. He's an amazing guy to have gone through that and come out the end still relatively well adjusted. I know of a lot of ex-Sci's who are completely moonbat crazy because of what they went through.
